Keith Urban seemed to disdain his clearly unhappy marriage to Nicole Kidman before she filed for divorce.
At Sunday’s premiere of “The Road” series, in which 12 emerging musicians compete to be the opening act during Urban’s U.S. tour, he took to the stage to sing “Straight Line,” a song from his latest album, “High.”
Urban, 57, reflected on the message behind the song in February 2024, telling his Instagram followers that it was about “getting out of the soul-sucking routine you might be stuck in.”
He elaborated, “Probably relationships, work, creativity, myself…whatever it is!!”
The country singer explained that he wanted to convey the idea of ”feeling alive again and coming out from under a dark cloud” with the song.
He said “Straight Line” is the first song on the album for “a number of reasons,” but especially because it “represents the consistent energy and spirit of the album as a whole.”
Urban told fans, “We’re going to cover a lot of themes, emotions, and vibes on this album, but there’s a very human spirit running through it all.”
At another point during the competition show, the musician complained that he was “lonely and miserable” as he reflected on the hardships of touring, noting that no matter what was going on in his personal life, the show had to go on.
In late September, news broke that he and Kidman’s 19-year marriage was ending.
“Sometimes relationships just pass on their own,” a source told Us at the time, adding that the 58-year-old actress “didn’t want to separate and was trying to salvage things.”
Kidman, who shares two children, Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14, with Urban, filed for divorce the next day.
Rumors then began to swirl that Urban was romantically involved with guitarist Maggie Boe, but these speculations remain unconfirmed.
