Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas’ eight-month romance reportedly failed because they “didn’t understand each other as a couple.”
A source told the Daily Mail on Thursday that the pair “ultimately realized they should continue working professionally,” adding: “They wanted to save their friendship and the future of cinema.”
Cruz and de Armas, who were first reported to be dating in February, will star in the upcoming supernatural thriller Deeper.
“They met to see if they could work together, but it took a further turn that neither of them expected,” the source said.
But, the source continued, “Like all good movies, everything comes to an end, and that was the case with Tom and Anna.”
The paper described Cruise, 63, as polarizing: “People either fall in love with him or they jump off the train because it’s too hard to follow.”
Mr. de Armas, 37, fell into the first category, as he reportedly found it “difficult to resist.”
While there is “nothing trivial” about how their relationship ended, the source noted that a reconciliation is unlikely because Cruise “doesn’t usually go back to the well.”
As for whether his long-standing association with the controversial Church of Scientology played a role in their breakup, sources claimed that the romance “wasn’t deep or long enough for Scientology to make or break their relationship.”
The Sun reported on Wednesday that the actor and actress were “no longer together,” with a source explaining that they no longer felt a “spark” and “realized they had no intention of distancing themselves.”
The source said that Cruz and de Armas have “really grown up” after their breakup and that they “still love each other.”
A source said, “Their time as a couple is over,” claiming that they are “better off as a couple,” and that they will “continue to be good friends.”
Cruz and de Armas were last seen together in late July, when they were photographed holding hands during a low-key vacation in Vermont.
