Selena Gomez debuted a diamond wedding ring shortly after getting married. The ring has a gap design to match Gomez’s marquise diamond engagement ring. The jeweler spoke to ELLE about the details of the piece and how it reflects current bridal jewelry trends.
Just hours after their wedding, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco unveiled the diamond wedding bands they chose to complement their marquise diamond engagement rings. And there’s a very smart design twist, multiple jewelers told ELLE.
“At first glance, Selena’s wedding ring appears to be a sophisticated diamond band with an opening designed to fit around a central diamond,” explains Angie Kennedy, vice president of merchandising at Zales. “It’s a beautiful way to accentuate the shape of her center stone and sit perfectly next to her engagement ring. It has a classic, timeless silhouette, while adding a modern twist to a traditional band with an opening at the top. Whether worn together or on its own, her wedding ring makes a statement on its own.”
Gomez’s ring has impeccable details and jewelers believe it is worth thousands. Here we will discuss in detail the design of the band and its distinguishing features.
Gomez’s eternity band has a gap so it can be layered seamlessly with an engagement ring.
Steph Mazuela, who founded her own eponymous brand of custom engagement rings, says a small gap in the band is a “smart option for people who have a large engagement ring and want a more substantial wedding ring as well. Without gaps or curves, a large wedding ring may not sit perfectly flush with the engagement ring’s center stone.”
Lauren Bock, Founder and CEO of Hella Fine Jewelry, explains: “Attaching a gap band to an engagement ring basket is technically very complex. The size of the opening has to be very precise down to a hundredth of a millimeter in order for it to fit snugly onto the engagement ring like a puzzle piece. And even if you make the gap the perfect size, polishing can change the size of the gap once it’s finished.” and the contraction of gold. If this is the case, you will need to adjust the size of the gap after finishing to account for those factors and ensure that the two rings fit together perfectly. ”
Boc shared two other examples of gap bands to show how gap bands overlap with other rings.
Gomez’s engagement ring features a low basket setting, making the gappy design an ideal choice.
Bock said the design of Gomez’s engagement ring made it difficult to stack a classic closed wedding ring flat. “Her engagement ring basket sits pretty low on her finger, which makes it difficult to slip a traditional wedding ring underneath, especially if it has such a large diamond.”
“It seems like Selena’s ring was set too low to have that gap. I think this was actually a great decision because taking a very large diamond off your finger can be uncomfortable and not very secure. A gap band with an opening in the middle is a great solution to fit a low set.”
She shared a diagram of how the stones stack up.
With any marquise ring, Mazuela says, “The structure and height of the engagement ring setting are important. Rings that sit very low on the finger or with a wide basket may offer a more comfortable wearing experience, but often the rings cannot be stacked directly underneath each other. If couples want a snug fit, choose a high-clearance setting, ideally 2 You need to let the jeweler know from the beginning so the two rings will work together.
“More than the shape of the marquise diamond, it’s how the engagement ring itself is made,” she continues. “A low-set marquise may not leave room for a wedding ring underneath, but a high-set style can. Couples should consider whether they want the bands to be exactly at the same height and choose a setting that allows that, avoiding low baskets or wide bases.”
The diamonds on the band appear to range from 0.25 carats to 1 carat each.
While the over 6-carat marquise diamond in Gomez’s engagement ring remains the main focus of her stack, her wedding ring also features quite a few diamonds. Mazuela estimates they are between 0.5 and 1 carat each. Kennedy estimates them to be between 0.25 and 0.33 carats.
Bock admits, “It’s a little hard to estimate without knowing the size of the marquise. I think they’re pear-shaped and about half a carat each.”
The ring is estimated to be worth between $5,000 and $40,000.
Bock said it’s difficult to estimate an exact price because the sides of the ring haven’t been seen yet. “If it’s an eternity band with a lot of extra diamonds, especially large diamonds, the price will be much different than if the ring just includes these two pairs,” she says. “Assuming Selena’s wedding ring only has the two diamonds shown in this first photo, a similar ring would be worth approximately $5,000.”
Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Mazuela have higher ratings. “The value of a work like this depends on many factors,” Mazuela said. “This band was probably custom-made to perfectly match Selena’s engagement ring, and likely uses the highest quality stones available. We believe the price range is between $10,000 and $20,000.”
Kennedy added, “Price for a diamond band of this style and quality can range from $20,000 to $40,000, depending on total carat weight, stone clarity and color, and designer. Considering Selena’s engagement ring selection and bridal jewelry as a whole, we can safely assume that her ring is made with the highest quality diamonds and is near the higher end of that range.”
Gomez’s wedding ring adds to the trend of brides choosing statement bands.
The actress’ choice of a diamond band reflects broader trends in wedding jewelry. “There’s a growing trend toward larger, bolder bands that complement the engagement ring but don’t disappear next to it,” says Mazuela. “More brides today are considering their entire ring stack and creating custom wedding rings that are highly individual and perfectly replicate their engagement rings.”
Kennedy added that Gomez’s open band could become a trendsetter in its own right, since it’s just starting to become popular. Gap rings “help you create a flush setting with your engagement ring without disrupting or compromising the ring’s design,” she says. “This also allows you to maintain a beautiful, understated setting for your engagement ring, since you don’t have to leave any space for the wedding ring to flow under the center stone.”
