Matthew McConaughey’s mother made a strange request after her husband died of a heart attack while having sex.
McConaughey, who first detailed his father’s death in his 2020 book, “Green Light,” explained in detail about his surroundings in a recent interview.
Talking to the Guardian about his new book, “Poetry and Prayer,” the actor said his father, James Donald McConaughey, who suffered from alcoholism, had always wanted to fall in love with his wife, Mary Kathleen “Kay” McConaughey and die.
He recited his wish in 1992 at the age of 62.
“When I got the call it was a Monday afternoon, I was in Austin and they were in Houston,” recalled the Texas native.
“Mom said: ‘Your dad moved on,’ but she didn’t tell me on the first call. When I returned she told me. ”
Matthew, 55, later learned, “They had a heart attack that morning, about 6:30am, as soon as they finished sex.”
With that in mind, James was naked when the paramedics arrived. Matthew remembers they were “trying to hide him” because they “took him to the gurney,” but Kay didn’t have it.
“My mother was in the driveway and she pulled the sheet out of him. …My mother wasn’t standing in the ceremony,” the star shared, “How to Lose a Man in 10 Days,” and the mother said, “It’s a big gym. He says how he’s going out.”
James and Kay, 93, had a turbulent relationship. The guardian describes them as “god-fearing parents” and “beat each other’s living crap.”
They also “married three times” and “divorced twice,” Matthew pointed out, theorizing that “they need some breaks from each other.”
As parents, they drove tough boats.
“The outcome was huge. You got expectations from my mother and dad. You were afraid to follow and be wrong,” the “Dallas Buyers Club” star emphasized that “respect”, “not talk to” and “try hard.”
“I couldn’t say, “I can’t” or “I hate it,” he added. “‘I hate’ and ‘I can’t’ were like Cuss’ words in our family. ”
