The upcoming Witness Protection Thriller series “Maya” from Channel 4, starring Bella Ramsey and Daisy Haggard, began filming in Scotland, with many names joining the cast.
Written and created by BAFTA and international Emmy candidate Haggard (Back to Life, Breeder) and also made his directorial debut, co-directing the series from photographs of the two brothers (Tourist, Fleabag, Boat Story) and directing alongside Jamie DeNuu (Doctor Who, Last King Dom).
In the six-part series, Ramsey plays the masterpiece of Maya, Anna’s (Haggard) teenage daughter. Forced to a witness protection program to escape life-threatening danger, Anna and Maya move into a small, rural town in Scotland, leaving behind London’s life and parents, Nancy (Harriet Walter – “Succession”, “Ted Lasso”) and George (Tom Korsnay – “Quartet”, “45 years”). Senior Detective Staff Debs (Josie Walker – “knecap”, “andor”) and witness protection officers Tony (Stuart Bowman – “Department Q”, “Rebas”) and Karen (Kiransonia Sour – “Slow Horse”, “True Love”) “September 5”, “The Dig”) and Ted (Raphel Famotibe – “The Night Manager S2”, “Wale”) are intended to track them down. As the wall approaches, it becomes clear that the seemingly charming Bobby (Tobias Menzies – “F1”, “Crown”) is still a very current threat, as it is approaching.
Also in the cast are Serena Mantegi (“Diploma”, “Mrs. Wilson”, Archie Backhouse (“Strategic Love Play”, “Farmhall”), Paul Blair (“Outlaw King”), Sonny Poon Tip (“Industry,” “Andor”), Finlay Shack (“Dept Qut”), Max Fincham (“Bridgerton, “Harlots”), Harry Hadden-Patton (“Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale”, “Twisters”), Tori Allen-Martin (“Here We Go”, “London Kills”), and Isabele Derosa (“Booting the Pan Am 103”).
“Maya” is described as a “dark comedy,” and “is a psychological thriller with an atmosphere that explores themes of predatory male behavior, family and love, but more than anything, it is a warm and witty celebration of special, unbreakable bonds shared between mothers and daughters.”
“After years of writing and dreaming, I’m extremely excited to start filming ‘Maya’ and can’t get past the incredible cast. Haggard said. “As both the director and the actor of this series, I feel very fortunate to work with all these very talented actors.”
Added photo executive producers Daisy Mount and Alex Mercer of the two brothers. “The bar was set so high on ‘Maya’ with Bella and Daisy leading the cast and the incredibly funny scripts of Daisy, so we’re created by this incredible roster of talent that joins the ensemble along them.
“The Commissioning Editor for Channel 4 Dramas” said: The incredible script has piqued such respect and exciting talent led by Daisy and Bella.
