Zootopia 2 is Disney’s biggest animated movie ever, surpassing Frozen 2

“Zootopia 2” is going down in Disney’s annals.

The animated sequel has now grossed $1.46 billion worldwide, making it Walt Disney Animation’s highest-grossing film in history. This surpassed the previous record holder, “Frozen 2,” which earned $1.45 billion in 2019.

“Zootopia 2” grossed $333 million domestically and a whopping $1.13 billion overseas. Over the Christmas holiday weekend, the film soared at the box office in its fifth week of release, adding $87.9 million to its already impressive box office collection.

The film reached the coveted $1 billion milestone just 17 days after its release, making it the fastest film in history to receive a PG rating. It has been particularly successful in China, where many Hollywood films have struggled in recent years. At the Chinese box office alone, “Zootopia 2” has already grossed more than $500 million, making it the highest-grossing American film ever. The only other film that comes close is Disney’s also recently released Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is approaching $100 million after its Dec. 19 release.

Only three movies, including Zootopia 2, have surpassed $1 billion worldwide this year. And Chinese animation “Ne Zha 2” has become the year’s biggest film with over $2.2 billion.

Zootopia 2, starring Ginnifer Goodwin as rabbit Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman as wise-cracking fox Nick Wilde, reunites the two creatures as cop partners in the sequel to Disney’s 2016 hit. This time, the two friends must discover a reptilian mystery that threatens to upend Zootopia’s animal paradise.
