Woody Harrelson has bad news for True Detective fans. Appearing on Today while promoting his new film Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the actor said there was “no chance” he would reunite with Matthew McConaughey for the new season, which centers on season one’s main characters Rust Cohle and Marty Harty. Both actors received Emmy nominations for their roles in the debut season, which aired on HBO in the winter of 2014.
“A lot of people want to know if True Detective with you and Matthew McConaughey will be back on the air,” said Today co-host Dylan Dreyer. “[McConaughey]actually said he’d be interested in it if, ‘Woody and I think that’s enough. It’s not even a choice.'” Would you like to try one more? ”
“Matthew is a very funny guy,” Harrelson replied. “To be fair, that’s never going to happen. There’s no chance…because it turned out great. I like how it turned out. If anything, I think doing another season would taint it.”
“True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto said on the “Nothing Left Unsaid” podcast in May that he had a new story idea that would bring back the characters of Last Cohle and Marty Harty. McConaughey told Variety shortly after that he was open to returning, depending on the script.
“We had a successful first season,” McConaughey said. “But if it’s a script that has passion and originality, like the first one, I’ll do it. And talk about monologues. Well, Last Call had a monologue. He spoke about everything that was inside him, and he didn’t care if you were listening. There’s a freedom in that.”
Pizzolatto said of the idea for a new season of True Detective, which teamed up Last Marty and Marty, “It’s character-based again. … But it’s not something I wrote or anything. It was just in my head. And we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a matter of whether or not it happens.”
In the end, Harrelson doesn’t seem too interested. Watch the actor’s full “Today” interview in the video below.
