A woman died of an “apparent suicide” outside Disney World’s Contemporary Resort in Florida on Tuesday, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
“We can confirm that this is an apparent suicide,” a spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office told Variety in an email.
Because the suicide scene was close to the famous Disney World monorail, there were unconfirmed reports online about the cause of death. However, a spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office told People that the victim “was not hit by the monorail” and considered all reports implicating him to be “misinformation.”
Local media outlet WKMG reported that local authorities received a call at around 6:40 p.m. local time that a body had been found on North World Dive, which passes through Disney’s Contemporary Resort.
An onlooker’s video posted online showed employees erecting a white pop-up tent on the terrace of the Contemporary Resort in the wake of the incident. You can see police cars gathered in the parking lot below.
Originally opened in October 1971 as the Tempo Bay Hotel, the Contemporary Resort was one of the two original residences built at the Disney World complex. The Disney World website describes the hotel as an “ultra-modern” property featuring an “iconic A-frame contemporary tower” and a “90-foot-tall mural by Disney Legend Mary Blair.” This is responsible for the unique look and feel of the It’s a Small World attraction.
The suicide occurred a week after a woman in her 60s died from health problems after riding the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland in California. Anaheim police confirmed that the woman remained unresponsive after exiting the ride, and Disneyland security performed CPR until first responders transported her to the hospital. She was later pronounced dead.
