Chad Smith confused Studio 8H when he took to the “Saturday Night Live” stage this week with an impersonation of host Will Ferrell.
“I’m thrilled to be hosting ‘Saturday Night Live’ again,” said the Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer, who has been joked for decades about his resemblance to Ferrell. “I’ve been a cast member here for seven years, and this is now my sixth time hosting!”
A minute later, Ferrell ran onto the stage and asked, “What the hell do you think you’re doing? You’re not the host. I’m the host!” Ferrell continued, “What the hell happened? He pushed me backstage and I fell hard. Lorne had to give me mouth-to-mouth. Seriously, what are you doing here?”
After Ferrell finally banished Smith from the stage, he took questions from the audience and called out the “cute guy” – musical guest Paul McCartney.
“I have a question for you, Chad, what do you think you’re doing?” the Beatles asked Ferrell, to which Ferrell responded, “Look, I understand your confusion. Me and Chad are a lot alike. But I’m Will. I’m your host tonight.”
McCartney: “Good job, Chad. Get back. Get back behind the drums. Get back to where you belong.”
Ferrell then began naming some of the great songs McCartney had written over the years, highlighting 17 hits by the Beatles, Wings, and McCartney. “But people tend to forget that there are some great songs that you didn’t write,” Ferrell continued. “Alphabet songs. ‘Timber’ featuring Pitbull. All Smash Mouth songs.”
McCartney’s only retort was, “Get behind the drums, Chad.”
