Luciana Damon was working as a bartender when she met Matt Damon. They have been married for over 20 years and have four daughters. The couple recently attended the Odyssey premiere with their four daughters.
Matt Damon may be one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but his love story started far from a movie set.
The actor met his wife, Luciana Damon (née Barroso), in 2003 while filming Stuck on You in Miami. At the time, she was a bartender, and what started as an unexpected encounter eventually evolved into a long-lasting marriage.
More than 20 years later, the couple have four daughters, work together professionally and behind the scenes, and continue to put family first, even as Matt’s career takes him all over the world. Most recently, Luciana and her daughters attended the London and New York premieres of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
Here’s everything you need to know about Luciana Damon.
She is from Argentina.
Luciana was born in Argentina and later immigrated to the United States.
Although she largely stayed out of the public eye throughout her marriage, she gave a rare interview to Vogue Australia in 2018, offering a glimpse into her family life and relationship with Matt.
She met Matt while working as a bartender in Miami.
Matt and Luciana first met in 2003 while filming Stuck on You in Miami.
Matt likes to describe it as love at first sight. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2011, he recalled, “I literally saw her across a crowded room. Eight years and four children later, that’s my life. If that hadn’t happened, I don’t know how else our paths would have crossed.”
Luciana remembers that night a little differently.
“Matt’s story is that he saw me across the room and there was a light above me, and I was like, ‘Yeah, it was a nightclub. There were lights everywhere!'” she told Vogue Australia.
She explained that Matt came behind the bar after fans started approaching him asking for photos and autographs.
“He started getting recognized and asking for pictures and autographs, but he started getting aggressive because people were drinking,” she said. “So he hid behind a bar and wanted to hang out there and drink. He said, ‘Oh, I saw you. I really wanted to talk to you.'”
Instead of leaving him alone, she gave him a job.
“I said, ‘If I’m going to come back here, I can’t just stand there!'” she recalled. “He had trained as a bartender for a movie many years ago, so I started making drinks. And that night he made me a lot of money in tips, because of course everyone wanted to go see him. So it turned out to be a really fun night, and 15 years later, here we are!”
She was already a mother when they met.
When Luciana met Matt, she was raising her daughter Alexia from a previous relationship.
She told Vogue Australia that when Matt invited her to continue the night with him and his friends, she declined because she needed to get home.
“I was like, ‘I can’t do it, I have a 4-year-old daughter, I’m not going anywhere’…and that was one of the things he loved about me having a daughter,” she said.
“He said, ‘I love you being a mom and that’s your number one priority.’ Some men might think it’s different, it’s complicated, but that wasn’t the case with him. When you meet someone you connect with, it’s just someone you connect with, and all the other stuff, the movie star part, didn’t really matter. It was just Matt, to me he was just Matt.”
The couple later had three daughters, Isabella, Gia, and Stella, and for a long time Matt thought of Alexia as his own.
They have been married since 2005.
After dating for about two years, Matt and Luciana privately married in December 2005.
Their wedding rings carry a particularly meaningful family tradition. Speaking to Parade in 2017, Matt explained that the ring contained a small diamond from his grandparents’ wedding ring.
“They weren’t high-quality diamonds. That’s what (my grandfather) could buy,” he said. “But the marriage lasted. They remained married for over 60 years. It wasn’t about the ring, it was about the marriage itself.”
“So when I told my mother that I was marrying Lucy, she gave me that ring and there were six little diamonds in it. We took three of them and put them inside my band, and then we took three of them and put them inside her band. So you can’t see them, but hopefully we’re carrying the best part of that union with us.”
They prioritize spending time together.
Over the years, Matt has shared certain relationship rules that have helped him make his marriages last.
He told YourTango in 2021: “We have a two-week rule. We can’t be apart for more than two weeks. I think you should be with the person you love as much as possible. My wife is my soulmate. I don’t like being apart from her.”
There are rare exceptions. While promoting Oppenheimer in 2023, Matt joked to Entertainment Weekly that he had negotiated a hiatus from acting with one exception.
“I thoroughly negotiated my time off with my wife so it wouldn’t get too personal,” he said. “The only thing I had to worry about when I took time off was if I was going to get a call from Chris Nolan.”
She is one of Matt’s biggest supporters.
Matt has repeatedly stated that Luciana has helped him get through both his career and life.
During an interview on Jake’s Takes in 2023, he recalled being disappointed that the movie didn’t turn out the way he had hoped while filming.
“I remember my wife pulling me up when I fell into depression,” he said.
Her advice was simple.
“She just said, ‘We’re here now.'”
Matt added, “She’s a huge reason why I’m so proud to be a professional actor. And being a professional actor means working your hardest 15 hours a day. If you can do that, even if you know it’s a wasted effort, you’re a professional. And she really helped me with that.”
She started working behind the scenes in movies.
Luciana wasn’t in the entertainment industry when she met Matt, but has taken on bigger roles behind the camera in recent years.
She served as an executive producer on The Instigators in 2024 and produced The Rip in 2026.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of The Investigators, Matt said the producer credit was years in the making.
“She’s read every script and seen every cut of every movie for 21 years. This is the first time we’ve codified it,” he said.
Luciana added that she initially resisted taking credit for her work.
“She didn’t want to take the credit. She was there every day, doing all the work on the script, and she was like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to take the credit.'”
“The other producers on this movie… took it upon themselves to (and said), ‘If you don’t take credit, we won’t take credit.'” It was very sweet. She gave in and took the credit. ”
She says they don’t take their relationship for granted.
Luciana rarely talks about her marriage publicly, but when Vogue Australia asked her about her secret to making a relationship last, her answer was refreshingly simple.
“I don’t know!” she said.
“All I know is that we’re really, really lucky to have found each other, so we can’t take it for granted. It’s life and it’s marriage, so it’s going to have its ups and downs, but overall it’s easy going and fun. And he’s a really good father.”
