Walmart casts Walton Goggins as Grinch to spice up Black Friday

Walton Goggins has played complex characters in series such as “The Shield” and “Justified.” He now hopes his latest tepid performance will help an unexpected beneficiary: Walmart.

Mr Goggins is once again taking on the role of the Grinch to draw attention to the retail giant’s Black Friday plans. The new sale will be available from November 25th to 30th, and the Cyber Monday promotion will end on December 1st. Goggins, who has been appearing in Walmart ads since June, said the decision to work on the Grinch during the holiday season was not taken lightly.

“When they brought this idea to me, I just roared,” the actor confessed in a recent interview, adding, “My elation turned to anxiety, because the Grinch is one of the most beloved characters in literature. Dr. Seuss is literature, and this is one of the most iconic characters in the world.”

The actor said he took “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” with him on various trips over several weeks and became immersed in the story and the characters portrayed by the author. You must overcome your strong desire to ruin the holiday season of a nearby village until you realize that the village’s residents’ holiday spirit lies not in gifts and commercialism, but in compassion and friendship.

But it wasn’t until he was fully fitted with a prosthetic limb for a commercial shoot that Goggins truly realized the character. “It took me two and a half, three hours to put on makeup the first time, but somehow I figured it out,” he recalls. “After the shape of the face was decided, we decided what it was, and we had the prosthetics put in the nose and mouth, I asked if I could be alone. My smile told me who I wanted to be.” He came to think of the Grinch as someone who was “just irritating, a little irritating,” adding that when he sent images of himself to his wife, she saw the character as someone who was fun to be around, despite the Grinch’s inherent irritability.

In recent years, Walmart has tried to grab attention during Black Friday and holiday shopping by evoking famous movies and TV shows. The company has launched a campaign to reunite actors from the hit “Mean Girls” and cult favorite “Office Space.” Last year, the company debuted a 10-part commercial “series” promoting the deals available in its stores, starring actors like Taye Diggs, Lisa Rinna, Ian Somerhalder, Anthony Ramos, Chad Michael Murray, Jake Shane and Goggins to participate in photo shoots meant to remind viewers of their favorite videos, including “Bridgerton,” “Yellowstone,” “Friday Night Lights” and “Vampire.” diary. ”

But the real star of the campaign is the sale. Walmart will be introducing a 10-in-1 gaming table set that can be purchased for $149.99, compared to the original price of $381.99. The Flashforge Adventurer 3D printer will retail for $229 instead of $799. iHome Towel Warmer retails for $34.24

Mr. Goggins is increasingly working for big advertisers, including GoDaddy and PepsiCo’s Doritos. The actor says that early in his career, he was “terrified” of participating in advertising. As time went on, he learned that he could put his own spin on projects. He said he discovered it after a conversation with actor Samuel L. Jackson, who has worked with Capital One, Adidas, and the energy company Vattenfall.

Jackson told Goggins that when it came to commercial work, he would “stand in the mirror” and think about how to get the message across in his own unique way. And that, Goggins says, is “my strength.”

Would Goggins want to play the character again if Walmart needed him? “I had so much fun playing with him that I didn’t want it to end,” he says, but such a decision is “way beyond my pay grade.”
