Timothée Chalamet and Adam Sandler discussed their careers and skills at the Fairfax High School gymnasium in Los Angeles, where Chalamet praised Sandler as “one of the best fucking actors of all time.”
The event, dubbed “Sandler x Chalamet,” was held on the evening of November 15th. In front of a sold-out audience, Chalamet and Sandler reviewed and discussed clips from their respective filmography, including the upcoming releases “Marty Supreme” and “Jay Kelly.” After seeing a clip of Sandler in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2006 romantic drama Punch-Drunk Love, Chalamet expressed his appreciation for Sandler’s performance in the film.
“This is one of the most important performances. It’s impactful and deeply moving,” Chalamet said. “As a young actor who knows you for your comedic work, seeing that thrown into the context of your other work made me think, ‘Wow, this is a really great actor. I wish I could act like this, too.'”
Chalamet went on to praise Sandler’s performance outside of Punch-Drunk, saying, “I know awards don’t matter, but you should just win the golden man, because you’re one of the greatest fucking actors of all time.”
Sandler also returned the praise, telling Chalamet, “What you continue to do for movies and all of us goes above and beyond. I can’t wait to see what you bring to the table in the future.”
Additional clips from the night included sneak peeks of Sandler’s Big Daddy and Uncut Gems, Chalamet’s Call Me By Your Name, Dune Part 2, Completely Unknown, Marty Supreme and Jay Kelly, and clips of both actors in a Saturday Night Live sketch.
The two have never appeared in a movie together, but Chalamet appeared in a cutscene in Jason Reitman’s Men, Women and Children, which Sandler starred in in 2014. Even though Chalamet wasn’t a finalist, Sandler said, “I remember when Jason Reitman was talking about you being in the movie, he said to me, ‘Oh, we got this kid to play quarterback. He’s coming. He’s amazing.'” He liked and knew. ”
The two broke down each other’s scenes, reminisced about their time on “SNL,” joked about their shared hobbies of basketball and guitar, and each displayed their signature wit throughout. At the end of the night, two members of the audience were invited to play a game of 2-on-2 half-court basketball with the star players.
“Marty Supreme” is directed by Josh Safdie, who was in the audience and also directed Sandler in 2019’s “Uncut Gems.” The film will be released in theaters on Christmas Day. “Jay Kelly” is directed by Noah Baumbach and will be released on Netflix on December 5th.
