Netflix has set an official premiere date for the Little House on the Prairie series, and the streamer also announced that the show has already been renewed for a second season.

The new Little House on the Prairie series, based on the popular Laura Ingalls Wilder book series, launches on July 9th. The show was first announced to be picked up for series in January 2025.

The logline reads: “Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival story, part origin story of the American West, this new adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical Little House offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of the people who shaped the frontier.”

The cast includes Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes as Laura’s sister Mary, Luke Bracey as Charles Ingalls, also known as Pa, and Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline Ingalls, also known as Ma.

Rebecca Sonnenshein will serve as showrunner and executive producer on Little House on the Prairie. Joy Gorman Wettels of Joy Coalition will also executive produce along with Tripp Friendly, Dana Fox and Susannah Vogel of Friendly Family Productions. Produced for Netflix by CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios. The series is directed by Sarah Adina Smith (101), Julie Ann Robinson (102, 103), Kat Candler (104, 105), Erica Tremblay (106), and Sydney Freeland (107, 108).

Friendly is the son of Ed Friendly, who served as executive producer of the original “Little House on the Prairie” television series.

“I am so grateful to our incredible cast and crew who put their heart and soul into making our first season a reality,” Sonnenschein said. “We can’t wait to share our new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix has given us the opportunity to continue the story.”

Ingalls Wilder published eight “Little House” books in the 1930s and ’40s, with the ninth published posthumously in 1971. These books are based on her childhood in the American Midwest in the late 1800s. More than 73 million copies of the book have been sold to date.

“We are thrilled to be producing a new second season of this beautiful reimagining of Little House on the Prairie ahead of its debut on Netflix,” said Ginny Howe, head of scripted series for the US and Canada, Netflix. “The extraordinary work of Rebecca Sonnenschein and the entire Season 1 cast and crew has established a rich foundation for years of storytelling to come. With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we are confident Little House will offer fans even more of what they truly love.”
