Ralph Fiennes believes the ship has sailed to reprise his role as Voldemort, but he would be happy to hand over the wand to another acclaimed British actor, Tilda Swinton.
Appearing on “The Claudia Winkleman Show” on Friday night, Fiennes was asked about HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series and rumors about who will play the role of the Dark Lord.
“I remember being asked if I wanted to reprise the part after we had finished filming the series, which was a few years ago, and I said, ‘Yes, I would love to do it,'” Fiennes revealed. “But nothing happened after that and I think the ship has sailed.”
But he also added: “But I’ll tell you, Tilda Swinton was mentioned somewhere as a candidate. I think she’d be a great player.”
In fact, Swinton’s name had been rumored as a possible co-star with Cillian Murphy, but the “Oppenheimer” and “Peaky Blinders” star recently shot down those rumors.
“I don’t know anything about that,” Murphy said on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. “And it’s really hard to follow what Ralph Fiennes does. He’s an absolute acting legend, so I wish whoever takes his place the best of luck.”
Fiennes has previously supported Murphy’s appearance, telling Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live in December 2024, “Cillian is a great actor. It’s a great proposal. I fully support Killian, yeah.”
The first season of HBO’s Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere this Christmas.
