In a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment this week, actress Angelina Jolie made some rare comments about her relationship with her children. Jolie has six children with ex-husband Brad Pitt: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne.
The star is currently promoting her new film Couture, in which she plays Maxine Walker, a film director who discovers she has breast cancer. In a conversation with an online publication, she was asked about how her perspective has changed since her youth.
“Oh, totally,” she said. “Totally, and maybe I’m a little closer to my old self.”
“Now that my daughters are older, I’m discovering something. They’ve talked to me as young women and I’m seeing what I want for them. I’m seeing what I don’t want them to lose and what I want them to keep. And it’s like a reminder of what I might have lost.”
Jolie added that she wants her daughters to continue to walk through life with strength, tolerance, softness, faith and ferocity. ”
“In a way, I think they’re bringing me back to my old self,” she added. “It reminds me of my desire for them to have strength, tolerance, softness, faith and ferocity.”
And her relationship with them also changed.
“I think they want me to be more than just ‘mom’ now,” Jolie said.
During the interview, Jolie also made some very unusual comments about her love life since her divorce from Pitt in 2016.
“Honestly, I haven’t dated since my divorce 10 years ago,” she said. “So when I’m so focused on my kids and my family, I think in my head that those aspects of me are no longer the center of my life… So, yes, things are changing, but in ways I didn’t expect. I feel like I have to live again. Let’s be free again.”
