The Season 2 finale of “The Pit” was the most-watched episode of the series to date.
The 15th and final episode of the medical drama’s second season drew 9.7 million viewers through its opening weekend, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. In addition, all episodes of Season 2 so far have averaged 15.4 million viewers, a 50% increase over the Season 1 average.
Achieving this statistic makes “The Pit” the sixth current series on HBO Max to average over 15 million viewers, following “House of the Dragon,” “The White Lotus,” “Knights of the Seven Kingdoms,” “The Last of Us” and “It: Welcome to Derry.”
Variety critic Alison Herman wrote of the Season 2 finale: “Without the burden of establishing its presence or introducing its major characters, ‘The Pit’ used Season 2 to highlight the long-term internal effects that a career in emergency medicine has on its protagonists, who they already care deeply about. The individual nature of these conflicts left the season lacking the catharsis of an entire team coming together to face the unimaginable with courage and grace. That, of course. “If ‘The Pit’ was born out of a desire to portray the heroism and empathy of front-line health care workers, the show has used the resulting goodwill to illustrate the long-term damage those qualities can cause. And the long term is where great television can thrive.”
“The Pit” is set in the emergency room of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, led by Noah Wyle and led by Dr. Michael “Robbie” Robinavich. The cast also includes Patrick Ball, Catherine LaNasa, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Jeran Howell, Shabana Azeez, and Sepideh Moafi. As Variety exclusively reported, Supriya Ganesh left the series after season 2, and regular star Ayesha Harris was promoted to regular for season 3.
R. Scott Gemmill created the series with Weill, John Wells, Erin Jontow, Simran Baidwan, and Michael Hissrich of John Wells Productions, and also served as executive producer.
