Chris Abrego will remain as president of the Television Academy, the organization announced today. Mr. Abrego was re-elected to the Academy for a second consecutive term beginning January 1, 2026. Abrego, who ran for re-election unopposed, was re-elected at the TV Academy’s meeting Thursday night. The meeting also included the election of a board member and governor, who will serve until the end of 2027.
“I am honored to continue in this role,” Abrego said in a statement. “The past two years have emphasized the critical role the Academy plays in supporting our members, strengthening our television community, and advancing initiatives that support the long-term health of our industry. I look forward to building on this momentum and working with the newly elected officers and governors as we continue to guide the Academy Awards and Emmy Awards through a period of dynamic change in our industry.”
The TV Academy currently boasts a membership of 27,000 television professionals across 31 trade groups. Abrego operated on a platform that included launching this year’s Televerse Television Festival and promoting industry advocacy efforts, including direct engagement with policymakers in Washington, DC. and a strengthened Innovation Advisory Board, including expanded member education on AI and emerging technologies.
Under Abrego’s watch, the Emmy Awards saw ratings growth for ABC and CBS for two years. During his next term, the Academy plans to negotiate a new broadcast deal for the awards ceremony.
