“Sumpa Kingdom,” a drama set in Xizang that was selected for the Belt and Road Film Week sidebar at the Shanghai International Film Festival, held a post-screening event attended by director Rapal Gal, producer Sonam Gal, and cast members Tenzin Tsundwe, Joy, and Sonam Wangmo.
The film, based on the novel of the same name by author Miao Liang, depicts two eras. Its first series, set in 1995, tells the story of a rural doctor in Nakchu who takes in an orphaned Tibetan baby girl. In 2024, after growing up and receiving permission from her adoptive father, this young woman embarks on a journey with a wealthy merchant to unravel the historical mysteries surrounding the ancient kingdom of Sumpa. Rapal-Gal said the team maintained the spiritual core of the original work while reworking the character relationships and story structure, and based it on Saizo’s first-hand encounters with the landscape, customs, and culture.
Regarding casting Tenzin Tundue to play the guide Byma, Rapal Gal said the actor’s natural presence immediately felt like a perfect fit. “When we first discussed the role in Chengdu, we had a good agreement. We knew he was capable enough to play the role, so there was no need for an audition,” said Laparte-Gal. The director was equally cautious when it came to the romantic aspects of the film. “We didn’t intend for them to have an intense romantic relationship. A low-key, pure love fits their characters much better,” he said.
This film marks Tenzin Tsundwe’s feature debut. He drew on his background, having previously worked as a tour guide, while being aware of the differences between himself and the role. “I’m a Tibetan, but I’m playing another Tibetan. The character’s personality is half me and half Byma,” Tenzin Tsundwe said.
Actress Joy said she was honored to be able to convey her love for her hometown through this film, while her co-star Sonam Wangmo candidly reflected on filming. “Although the screen time was limited, filming at the foot of Sapu Sacred Mountain was an incredibly romantic experience,” said Sonam Wangmo.
The 28th Shanghai International Film Festival will be held until June 21st.
