Taiwanese animation director Fish Wang, who won the 2023 Sitges Film Festival Best Animated Short Award for his film Ghost of the Dark Path, returns to Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF) 2025 with a new project that expands on the world of his previous VR animated short Red Tail (2022).
Wondering Tales Of Blossmoss (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, France) continues Wang’s exploration of emotional storytelling, expanding the story into a long-form format. The story explores themes of memory, loss, and coming of age, blending elements of fantasy and imagination with the intimacy of personal introspection.
At the heart of this story is a universal question: Do life’s traumas lead to growth or become a burden? To bring this concept to life, Wang collaborated with Hong Kong screenwriter To Yuen and co-producer Polly Yong, and helped bring the project together with partners in Japan and France.
Intended for viewers ages 12 and up, Wondering Tales Of Blossmoss combines humor and visual appeal with philosophical elements to create a whimsical yet thought-provoking animated world.
Longtime collaborator Sanby Hsieh, who also worked with Wang on “Red Tail,” said Wang’s role in the new project goes far beyond directing.
“Fish is more than just a director; he shapes the overall aesthetic identity of the film and provides the writing team with a core narrative framework,” says Hsieh. “My job as a producer is to continue to ask questions from both a production and audience perspective to ensure the story maintains a consistent tone and rhythm throughout development.”
The project, currently in early development, was selected for the TCCF Pitching Program in the Animation category. The team plans to share Wondering Tales Of Blossmoss, along with Wang’s broader creative vision, with industry experts, animation creators, and other festival attendees.
“The first script draft is expected to be completed by December. We see TCCF as a great platform to increase international recognition and open the door for future collaborations,” Xie added.
For Wang, Wondering Tales Of Blossmoss, which has been in development since 2023, is also an effort to address the limited global exposure of Taiwanese animation.
“Taiwanese animation works are often difficult to be seen internationally,” Wang says. “By involving international partners early in the creative process, we hope to bring a broader perspective and stronger global potential to the project. The theme of growth through experience is universal, a story that transcends ages and cultures, inviting audiences to grow alongside the protagonists.”
TCCF 2025 will be held from November 4th to 7th at Nangang Exhibition Center in Taipei.
