This year, the American Society of Cinematographers has chosen to nominate five cinematographers in the feature film category.
The number of nominees in the theatrical feature category varies between five and ten, depending on the percentage of votes a film receives.
The feature film nominees for the 40th ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards, announced Thursday, are “Frankenstein” (Netflix) by Dan Laustsen, “Marty Supreme” (A24) by Darius Khondji, “One Battle After Another” (Warner Bros.) by Michael Bauman, “Sinners” (Warner Bros.) by Autumn Durald Arkapaw and “Train Dreams” (Netflix). Adolfo Veloso.
Three women were shortlisted in the cinematography category at the Oscars, but the ASC nominated Autumn Durald Arkapaw for “Sinners.”
Director Ryan Coogler’s go-to cinematographer Arkapaw became the fifth woman in history to be nominated in the ASC’s top category.
Last year, Mandy Walker was elected the 48th president of the American Society of Cinematographers, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She also made history in 2023 when she became the association’s first woman to win the ASC Award for Best Feature Cinematography for Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis. To date, she is the only woman to win in this category.
The ASC Awards will be presented on March 8th at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
