Sidney Sweeney has broken her silence over her controversial American Eagle jeans ad and support for President Trump.
In a cover story interview with GQ, the “Euphoria” actress was asked if she was “surprised” by the mixed reactions to the denim campaign, which was denounced as “Nazi propaganda.”
“I put out an ad for jeans,” she said matter-of-factly. “I mean, the reaction was definitely a surprise. But it’s… I love jeans!”
Sweeney, 28, suggested she join the campaign because she loves wearing denim.
“All I wear is jeans. I literally wear jeans and a T-shirt every day,” she said.
The “Anyone But You” star was asked in August what he thought about President Trump praising his ad.
“It was surreal,” she said with just a smile.
When an interviewer asked Sweeney if he felt “thankful” to have a powerful man like the president of the United States “back in the public eye,” he replied, “Well, I don’t think so…not that I didn’t feel that way, but I just never thought about it.”
Sweeney also said the backlash didn’t bother him because he “put my phone away” while filming the third and final season of Euphoria.
“I work 16 hours a day, and I don’t really bring my phone on set,” she said. “So, I work, then I go home and sleep. So I didn’t really watch it.”
Page Six reached out to President Trump for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
Over the summer, Sweeney made headlines when fans claimed that an American Eagle ad promoted “Nazi propaganda” by playing on the words “genes” and “jeans.”
In one of the ads, the “Immaculate” star, who has blue eyes and blonde hair, talked about how genes passed from parents to children determine traits such as “hair color, personality, and even eye color.”
And she ended the video by saying to the camera, “My jeans are blue.”
After receiving backlash from fans and ridicule from celebrities including Doja Cat and Lizzo, President Trump told reporters that Sweeney’s ad was “amazing.”
The businessman was pleased to hear that the actress was a “registered Republican.”
