Shay Mitchell has opened up about how motherhood has influenced the way she runs her successful luggage company, Base.
“I’m very particular about my time,” she exclusively told Page Six at Saturday’s Bayside Bowl Super Bowl party.
“But the Base office is my second home,” said the “You” actress, who shares 6-year-old Atlas Noah and 3-year-old daughter Roma with partner Matt Babel.
“And my daughters like it too. There’s a lot of snacks over there, so they’re always happy to come over when mom goes to work, so it works out well.”
Mitchell became a mother for the first time in October 2019 when she welcomed Babel, 45, and her first daughter Atlas Noah. The longtime couple, who started dating in January 2017, welcomed daughter Roma in May 2022.
The Pretty Little Liars alum launched Béis in October 2018, a year before becoming a mother. The brand includes luggage, fanny packs, backpacks, cosmetic cases, and a fan favorite, the coveted Weekender.
Most bags have built-in organizations such as shoe compartments, laptop sleeves, and laundry sections.
In a conversation with Page Six, Mitchell said she wanted to create bags that were “functional, good-looking, and in[her]price range.”
“I couldn’t find a suitcase or bag that met all three criteria: look great, be functional, and be affordable. That was my first mission at Beis,” she said.
For women who want to start their own business, Mitchell advised them to “just go out there and make it happen” and hire the right team.
“Follow your heart and follow your passion,” she told Page Six. “I think it’s better to hire someone smarter than you, because I have a great team with strengths that may not be the strongest. That’s one of the most important things I did in the beginning.”
