Kate Winslet is notorious for being private about her Hollywood romances.
The Titanic actress has found love on film sets several times since the beginning of her career, including with her late ex-boyfriend Stephen Tredre and first husband Jim Threadpleton. Winslet is currently married to Edward Abel Smith.
Winslet told the Journal that she takes pride in maintaining her privacy despite her high-profile romances and subsequent breakups throughout her career. Magazine, September 2015, “Nobody Really Knows What Happened in My Life.”
“No one really knows why my first marriage didn’t last. No one really knows why my second marriage didn’t last either. And I’m proud of that silence,” she added. “I know a lot of people who have been married a few times, even if it’s not in the public eye. I actually know them. And that’s just the cards life has dealt me. It wasn’t meant to be that way. And for me, it wasn’t easy.”

Winslet and the late Stephen Toread first met on the set of the 1991 sci-fi series Dark Season, when she was 15 and he was 27. Eventually the couple broke up after about five years.
Winslet said in a November 2006 interview with PEOPLE that Tredle made her feel “safe and included” and that he was “so inspirational,” adding, “He had an incredible zest for life. My life revolved around him.”
Before Winslet began filming the 1995 film Sense and Sensibility, Tredle was diagnosed with bone cancer. The couple separated when the screenwriter’s cancer went into remission. She couldn’t understand why they broke up, explaining, “Looking back now, I was so young. I was only 19. How could I leave someone so unwell? I knew Stephen would be okay.”
After the separation, Tredre became ill again, but the former couple continued to speak every day. Tredre died on December 8, 1997, the same week that Titanic premiered. Winslet ended up missing the Los Angeles premiere to attend James Cameron’s funeral back in the UK.

Winslet and her future “Holiday” co-star Rufus Sewell briefly dated in the ’90s.
Not much is known about their relationship, but she spoke about their brief romance in a March 1998 interview with Rolling Stone magazine.
Winslet said the couple had a three-month “affair” that ended when both parties unanimously “decided, ‘This is really just a friendship, right?'” ”

Winslet and her first husband, director Jim Threapleton, first met on the set of Hideous Kinky in late 1997. In an April 1999 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Winslet described their chemistry as “love at first sight,” adding, “When he first showed up on set, my actual reaction was, ‘Oh, no way…’ because I looked at this amazing person and knew something was going to happen.”
The couple met each other for the first time on set, and Winslet explained, “When my car approached on the first day, my husband turned away because he didn’t want me to see his first reaction. So when I looked at him, the first thing I saw was his butt and back…That was great.”
The couple married in an intimate ceremony in November 1998 and gave birth to their daughter, Mia, on October 12, 2000. However, Threapleton and Winslet eventually divorced in 2001.
Winslet said her daughter followed in her mother’s footsteps by becoming an actress, something she had “always wondered about.”
The mother-daughter duo first appeared together in I Am Loose, which premiered on Channel 4 in the UK in 2022. In the film, Winslet plays a mother who tries to help her daughter, played by Mia, who is suffering from mental health problems. Winslet is proud of her daughter’s performance, telling the Daily Mail in November 2022, “I was actually really surprised by my daughter. I mean, she didn’t need any help from me at all.”

Winslet met her second husband, director Sam Mendes, in the fall of 2001. At the time, he approached Winslet to star in two productions at London’s Donmar Warehouse, where he was artistic director from 1992 to 2002. Winslet ultimately turned down the offer and reflected on her decision in a 2008 interview with Vanity Fair.
She said she knew her schedule didn’t have time to do the play Mendez wanted, but she attended the meeting regardless and was fascinated by Mendez. As Winslet says, “I didn’t want to do the play. I definitely wanted to have a phone number.”
Emma Thompson was the ultimate catalyst that sparked their relationship. Winslet’s Sense and Sensibility co-stars hosted a barbecue so the couple could reunite.
Winslet and Mendes married in May 2003 while vacationing in Anguilla. The couple then had their first child together, and Winslet’s second child, a son named Joe, was born on December 22, 2003.
Winslet and Mendes ultimately broke up seven years later. In a statement given to PEOPLE in March 2010, their attorney said, “Kate and Sam were sad to announce their separation earlier this year. This separation is completely amicable and by mutual consent. Both parties are fully committed to co-parenting their future children.”

Winslet met her third husband, businessman Edward Abel Smith, while vacationing at her uncle Richard Branson’s Caribbean home on Necker Island in August 2011.
While on the island, a fire breaks out and Winslet ends up rescuing Branson’s mother from the main house, while Smith heads to a nearby house. Shortly thereafter, the couple married in December 2012.
At the time, Winslet’s rep told PEOPLE that after getting engaged that summer, they had a private ceremony in early December attended by a small group of friends and family, including their two children.
Winslet and Smith welcomed their first child, son Bear Blaze, on December 7, 2013. His middle name comes from a cute name his parents came up with after the Necker Island fire a few years ago.
Mr. Smith previously worked at his uncle’s space company, Virgin Galactic, but he gave up that title and took on a new title: stay-at-home dad. In a May 2021 interview with The New York Times, Winslet called Smith a “super hot, super human stay-at-home dad.”
“He takes care of us, especially me,” she said. “I used to say to him, ‘Neddy, can you do something for me?’ He just said, ‘Anything.’ He is truly a wonderful life partner. ”
