Rio Mehiel (“Matt,” “After the Hunt”) and Emily Carey (“House of the Dragon”) are set to star in Beso & Pucci Productions’ new Western film “Camino,” which will be released this week at Cannes Market through “Breaking Through the Lens.”
Camino, written and directed by Annabella Fazio in her feature debut, is described as a “lyrical, tactile neo-Western that explores themes of identity, masculinity and escape against a gritty Western backdrop,” according to a press release.
Mehiel will play Ifa, a cowboy searching for identity and survival, while Carey will play Ellie, a mosaic artist tied to a declining ranch. “This story follows two people as they journey through the wilderness and form an uneasy bond where devotion and betrayal begin to blur,” the release continues.
Mehiel first broke out with the acclaimed Sundance titles “Matt” and “In the Summers,” and then starred in Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt.” Meanwhile, Carrey starred in Netflix’s Geek Girl and is currently playing young Aristo Hightower in House of the Dragon.
The project is being developed and co-produced by Mr. Fazio and Sophia Kunz’s Beso Productions and Emily Skye Hickin’s Pucci Productions, which recently premiered “Bearcave” in Venice and the Lena Dunham-executive-produced short “Notice Me” at the BFI Flare Festival. The film was selected as a finalist in the Breaking Through the Lens competition and is a key title for both companies with a focus on international author-led storytelling and new voices.
“‘Camino’ exists in a timeless world where sandstorms and folklore feel equally real,” Kunz said in a statement. “As our first project, this represents our commitment to elevating underrepresented voices and championing stories with a bold and singular vision.”
Hickin added, “‘Camino’ is a script that captures the imagination of audiences around the world. This film, which explores masculinity set in Spain, felt especially timely and important to bring to life.”
Emmy Award-winning executive producer Theodora Dunlap (“The Farewell,” “The Independent”) is also attached to the project. Callo provides ongoing development and packaging support, and Jade Risser supports as a line producer for early development.
Mehiel is repped by Paradigm, Lighthouse and Imprint. Carey is represented by Curtis Brown.
