Karina Longworth’s podcast You Must Remember This returns with its newest season, The Bisexual, on September 15th.
Over eight episodes, creator and host Longworth explores the history of bisexuality in 1900s Hollywood. Beginning with Libby Holman’s rise to stardom in 1920s New York, “The Bisexuals” also explores her rise to notoriety following a husband-murder scandal in the 1930s.
The podcast also explores the cultural climate of the 1940s and 1950s, when it was unlikely that a movie star like Montgomery Clift, a member of Holman’s social circle, would be openly gay. By the 1960s, both Holman and Clift were too deeply wounded to benefit from the social revolution of that decade.
“The Bisexuals” also features characters such as Elizabeth Taylor, Josephine Baker, Billie Holiday, Kane and Paul Bowles, Talulah Bankhead and Nicholas Ray.
“You Must Remember This” was created by Longworth, a former film critic, in 2014. This podcast delves into the secret and forgotten history of 20th century Hollywood. The latest season, “The Old Man is Still Alive,” explores the filmography of early Hollywood directors who were still making movies in the late 20th century.
Previous seasons have focused on the origins of Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper’s celebrity gossip, the controversy surrounding the Disney film Song of the South, the repercussions of the Manson murders across Hollywood, and the professional rivalry between horror stars Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff.
Longworth is the writer, producer and narrator of “You Must Remember This.” Evan Viola is the editor.
