If you’re at least looking at the length of this year’s Emmy Awards, then the running gag about the boys and girls club on Sunday night was a success. That was the words of Jesse Collins entertainment producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jenna Luzan Clay, all of whom spoke in the report just minutes after the show was wrapped in the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
“The show wasn’t that long so it worked,” Luzan Clay said. She’s not wrong. At one point on the show, the winners were so good at keeping their speech short that the Emmies actually got shorter.
“We were hovering just a minute or two, and then we started to spread a little,” Collins said. “It faded a bit and it flowed all night.”
The idea of bringing Boys & Girls Clubs to Emmy Mix came from host Nate Bargatze. From there, all Emmy was in there. Idea: Bargatze starts the night by increasing $100,000 for the charity. And he’s minus $1,000 for each second speech, adding $1,000 to the two-second winner who finishes before the 45 seconds of time allocated for thanks. By the end of the night, the deficit was huge, but CBS still donated $100,000 and another $250,000 from Bargatze itself.
“I think it worked,” Collins said. “I mean, they came in expecting $100,000 and ended up at $350,000. So I think it was a victory for Boys & Girls Club.”
Early in the evening, the winners monitored Bargatze’s plans and kept their speech relatively short. Finally, by the evening, their gratitude was longer and people on stage had simply promised to add their money to the pot. “It felt like most people spoke at heart, and those who had longer speeches were still giving longer speeches. “But I didn’t get the feeling that someone had something because of that… there was a balance.”

Below are some of the other burning questions from the Sunday Night Emmy Awards.
Eric Dane dropped out as presenter at the last moment, abolishing the producer’s plans for reference to the 20th anniversary of “Grey’s Anatomy.”
As was originally announced, Dane and fellow “Glaze Anatomy” alumni Jesse Williams were planning to present Emmy to direct the drama series together. However, Dane, who announced that he had been diagnosed with ALS in April, was ultimately unable to attend.
“I don’t know the details,” Collins said. “I was told he couldn’t make it, and fortunately Jesse was able to present it himself.”
Dane and Williams’ original plans were not detailed. They were simply trying to acknowledge the “Glaze” anniversary. Without Dane, the producers decided to discard the reference. “But there was no set or anything,” Luzan Clay said. “It was a celebration of two of them.”

The “Philo T. Farnsworth” sketch, reminiscent of Bargatze’s “George Washington” skit from “Saturday Night Live,” was written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidel of the show. “SNL” – also approved by “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels, considering the gender (James Austin Johnson and Bowenyan appeared with Balgatze on cast member day).
The sketch came together “probably three or four weeks ago,” Collins said. “It was great to be able to do that, and Lone congratulated me to do that. We turned it over and loved George Washington’s tone, but the way they did it was amazing.
After the sketch was created, the decision was made not to let Bargatze do the traditional monologue opener.
“If you keep it locked in a sketch that has become a monologue,” Collins said. “Then he was character. He wasn’t Nate at that point. So it was a quick change after the awards, and it was a welcome to the show.”
Added Harmon: “And I’ll explain the work of Boys & Girls Club.”
There were no major sets or segments discarded this year.
“Nate had some things in the back pockets he wasn’t using,” Collins said. “But I think they’re more creative choices.”
The Balgatze denim joke told during the introduction to presenter Sidney Sweeney was actually a reference to the recent controversy surrounding her American Eagle Denim Campaign.
“Yes, that was his joke,” Collins confirmed.
Stephen Colbert
CBS
Stephen Colbert was chosen as the first presenter of the night – giving out lead actors in comedy Emmy and launching the show in a powerful moment. And it worked: the whole peacock theatre gave Colbert a standing ovation.
“He deserves it,” Harmon said. Added Collins: “We all felt that he was going to that stage and being his first award moment, and that he was happy to do it. We felt that it was a moment.”
And Luzan Clay said that when Colbert gave a ensemble speech as the winner of the talk show, it was “a lovely wraparound at the end.”
This year’s Emmys opened with two major awards shortly after Colbert and the Comedy lead actor category. Jennifer Coolidge handed out the lead actress in the comedy series Emmy.
“We wanted to give Colbert the award with some weight and let’s do it like Jen Coolidge and the great presenters we were,” Collins said. Added
Luzan Clay: “The audience is also interested and wants to remain involved from the beginning and the whole time.
The Jesse Collins Entertainment team admits that it’s a bit unusual to produce Emmy for a variety special (live) with two nominations (“Beyoncé Bowl” and Super Bowl halftime).
“It’s funny when you’re looking for something and it’s alive and you’re sitting there like, ‘What’s going to happen?’,” Harmon said.
Of course, this category ended up going to “SNL50: Anniversary Special.” “Lone Michaels is clearly an icon,” Collins said. “What he did with SNL, that’s a great ending to the SNL 50 story. ”
Although Beyoncé’s spokesperson was in the audience, it was never clear whether Beyoncé and Jay Z would attend themselves.
“We figured it out when they weren’t in our seats,” Collins said. “Oh, you guys aren’t coming!”

This year’s reunion and tribute combination began by securing a segment dedicated to “Golden Girls.”
“We took the lead in the ‘Golden Girls’,” Luzan Clay said. “It was a big thing. As soon as I realized it was 40 years since the day the show came, I knew I had to do ‘Golden Girls’. And I think Law and Order was something we wanted to be a hit.
Leva McCher, who led the theme song “Golden Girls,” proposed bringing Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman of Little Big Town.
“That song, it’s a country song and we had a lot of help from Reba to cast it,” Collins told Entertainment Tonight. “And she loves those women, and we’ll try out the trio.”

The “Survivor” tribute featured the show’s authentic props.
“Jeff gave us props!” Collins said. However, the cut-outs of Michaels and John Oliver were a surprise to both candidates as part of the “Tribal Council” that will win the scripted variety category. “We went cheating on it alone,” Luzan Clay said. Added Collins: “We just like it, just roll it. Don’t ask. I’ll apologise later!”
Harmon was in the Vatican hours before the Emmys and produced the Disney+ “Grace of the World” live concert event co-directed by Pharrell Williams and Andrea Boseli.
“It was Disney+ and it was our first concert at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican,” Harmon said. “We had John Legend, Andrea Boselli, Farrell, Jennifer Hudson, a lot of people. The big part was the drones. There were 3,000 drones on top of the Vatican. It’s a truly incredible show. We landed here at 6am the next morning and we went straight.
Collins and Company will not know for a while whether they will return to produce the Emmys for the fourth time in a row on NBC next year.
“Usually they have meetings in the spring,” Collins said. “So it’s time for us to come in and create a pitch.”
Next, Jesse Collins Entertainment will once again become part of the Super Bowl Halftime Show producer team. But no, they’re not ready to share details – including whether Taylor Swift is actually a performer.
“I don’t even know who’s playing!” Collins removed.
