What you need to know

Morgan Freeman says fame ‘didn’t change me one bit’ in new interview “I knew early on that one day I was going to get[an Oscar]. It didn’t change me,” the 88-year-old Freeman said on AARP’s Adult Movies.

Despite his legendary career, Morgan Freeman remains down to earth through it all.

The 88-year-old Oscar winner told AARP’s Movies for Adults that winning the prestigious award “didn’t change me at all.”

Freeman won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Eddie “Scrap Iron” Dupris in 2005’s Million Dollar Baby.

“I knew early on that I would eventually win (an Oscar), but that didn’t change me,” Freeman said. “I hope it didn’t change me. The only change I can expect after winning the Oscar is that the prices will probably go up a little bit and the chances of getting a job will go up a little bit.”

“I think those are one or two things you can look forward to. Other than that, don’t give in to your ego.”

Since winning his Oscar in 2005, the world-renowned actor has appeared in more than 30 films and has been praised for the depth he brings to a wide range of roles. Throughout his decades-long career, the actor has been nominated for four other Oscars: Best Supporting Actor for Street Smart (1987), Best Actor for Driving Miss Daisy (1989), Best Actor for The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and Best Actor for Invictus (2009).

When asked what movie best represents his career, the actor said it’s a torso.

“Mr. Daisy, the driver, is sitting much higher up,” Freeman said. “So are Invictus. Actually, I like a lot of them.”

The 1989 comedy-drama Driving Miss Daisy details the unlikely friendship between an elderly Jewish widow named Daisy, played by Jessica Tandy, and a black chauffeur named Hawk, played by Freeman. The film, written by Alfred Woolley, was inspired by the relationship between his grandmother and her driver.

Driving Miss Daisy won Best Picture at the 61st Academy Awards and was praised for its exploration of friendship that transcends racial prejudice.

In Invictus, Freeman plays Nelson Mandela during his time as president of post-apartheid South Africa. The 2009 film tells the true story of Mandela’s efforts to unite a divided country through rugby. Directed by Clint Eastwood, Invictus is the third film in which Freeman and Eastwood have teamed up, following Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004).

Freeman credits Eastwood, 95, as the secret to his youthful appearance. He told AARP that a longtime friend told him, “Don’t let old people in.”

“The way to do that is to keep getting up in the morning, keep working out at the gym, keep taking your vitamins, keep taking your prescribed medications, and keep moving,” Freeman added. “Keep moving. That’s the whole secret.”

The actor has done just that. Freeman returned to the Now You See Me series as magician Thaddeus Bradley in the third film in the series, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. The film stars the series’ original cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, and Dave Franco, as well as a new cast of illusionists played by Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, and Ariana Greenblatt.

The heist movie is currently in theaters.
