Michael Caine is looking at his return to acting in the sequel to Lionsgate’s “The Last Witch Hunter.” The 92-year-old screen legend is set to come out of the retirement of this feature. This will bring Vin Diesel back to the headline. The sequel is quickly tracked through development on the production banners One Race Films by Lionsgate and Diesel.
Although his contract with Kane has not been finalized, the actor is expected to re-perform his role from the 2015 original “The Last Witch Hunter.” Kane played Dolan. Dolan played the priest supporting Diesel warrior Karlder as he fought to stop the plague spread by the Witch Queen.
The original “Last Witch Hunter” was a somewhat passionate project for Diesel, who touted the adventure film as an adaptation of his own “Dungeon & Dragons” campaign. Released by Lionsgate in October 2015, the film won just $27 million in North America, but proved a stronger overseas draw at $119 million from international territory. Per Lionsgate was the second life of “Last Witch Hunter,” a digital and home video that includes a run as one of Netflix’s most-watched movies this year, leading to the development of a sequel 10 years later.
“The Last Witch Hunter has grown into a global fan favorite since its theatrical release, and viewers have been discovering it on all platforms for the past decade. “Vin and I have partnered many times over the years. He is a real force in our industry. We are excited to see him return to this iconic role and reunite with him. Advances in filmmaking technology have enabled us to offer sequels on an even more ambitious scale.”
The sequel to “The Last Witch Hunter” marks Caine’s first feature since 2023, when he announced he retired from acting at the age of 90.
“I had a photo of me playing the lead and I thought there were incredible reviews,” Kane told BBC Radio 4’s Today Show at the time. “The only people I’m most likely getting now are elderly, 90-year-old men, maybe 85.
