Matthew Lillard surprised fans at Cinespia’s Halloween party screening of “Scream” on Friday night, speaking to the crowd and sharing a courageous message for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“ICE is fucked,” Lillard said. “In this day and age, in this city, we must lead with love. In this moment, let’s remember that shit. It’s not about being political, it’s about being political as shit.”
He also encouraged fans to vote for Proposition 50, which would allow California to redraw its congressional districts to counter Texas’ redistricting.
“Yes, 50 people. You have to vote. If you don’t vote, we decline. So, it’s our responsibility. And if you don’t like it, I’m not sorry,” he added.
Lillard stars in Scream as Stu Mucher, a member of a murder team alongside Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis in Wes Craven’s 1996 horror masterpiece. Lillard will be returning to Scream 7 along with original cast members Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox.
Since Donald Trump took office, ICE has always been a top priority for many in the United States, and Hollywood is no exception. In early October, Jeff Bridges appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” as his iconic “Big Lebowski” character, The Dude. To proclaim, “Let’s take ICE off the streets and into our drinks.”
Late-night satires like “South Park” and “Saturday Night Live” have also heavily criticized ICE. For example, in the cold open of the Oct. 8 episode of “SNL,” hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey played U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, respectively. During the sketch, Faye’s gnome gave some background on how ICE recruits people: “How did you find out? Do you post ads like this and need a job now? Yes. Are you a big, tough guy? Yes, tough enough for the military or police? No. Are you taking supplements you bought at a gas station? Do you take them every day? Do you want to use zip ties because people don’t trust you to have the keys? You know. Smoke some of these, big guy. Welcome to ICE. ”
