The Wuthering Heights romance of ‘Wuthering Heights’ has officially arrived in Sydney, and Margot Robbie has donned a costume for the event.
The high-profile film held its red carpet premiere on Thursday, marking the return of its Australian lead cast.
Robbie, 35, arrived wearing a custom Ashi Studio Couture gown in pale ecru with sheer tulle off-the-shoulder sleeves and a distressed tulle skirt with dramatic shreds at the cuffs and hem.
In collaboration with legendary corset maker Mr Pearl, the bodice is reminiscent of 18th century corsets and hand-painted to resemble antiques from centuries ago.
Her jewelry, a yellow and black gold and diamond choker and ring by Lorraine Schwartz, once again added to the gothic appeal, while custom shoes by Manolo Blahnik completed the look.
Elordi, who plays Heathcliff opposite Robbie’s Catherine Earnshaw, made a striking appearance wearing a blue double-breasted suit and gold-toothed hat, similar to the one he wears in the film.
On the red carpet, the Australian added some sparkle with a small diamond next to the ‘H’ inscription on his cap.
The Wuthering Heights press tour has been the talk of fashion fantasy since it kicked off in late January, with Robbie playing Emily Bronte’s brooding heroine alongside stylist Andrew Mukamal. Not surprisingly, he was also the mastermind behind her 2023 “Barbie” red carpet marathon.
For the Los Angeles premiere on January 28, Robbie wore a custom Schiaparelli dress in black and red ombre that captured the drama, romance, and passion of the story. However, it was her jewelry that stole the show. Richard Burton, who played Heathcliff in the 1958 film Wuthering Heights, once gave Elizabeth Taylor an $8.8 million Taj Mahal diamond necklace.
At the film’s London premiere last week, she wore a replica of Charlotte Brontë’s mourning bracelet made from the hair of fellow novelists Emily and Anne Brontë. Emily wrote Wuthering Heights in 1847 and died a year later at the age of 30.
The Queenslander also pulls out Victorian-era corsets, a 1992 John Galliano archive, and vintage Vivienne Westwood, and frequently cites specific quotes from the novel.
A feathered Victoria Beckham seemed to be nodding to the scene where Duchess Kate “tear a pillow with her teeth”, while Dilara Findikoglu in red snakeskin gave a nod to the line “I’d rather be hugged by a snake”.
“Our costumes will evolve throughout the press tour to cover several scenes and ideas in the movie,” she told Variety in Los Angeles.
The film, directed by Emerald Fennell and soundtracked by Charli XCX, will be released in theaters on February 13th.
