Roh Films Germany returns to India with its first local production since ‘The Lunchbox’ (2013), producing the noir thriller ‘But First, The Burning’ in partnership with First Ray Films India.
The film is directed by Indian filmmaker Devashish Makhija and stars Anshuman Jha. It has been decided that France’s En Compagnie des Lamas (“Cape”), led by Sandrine Brauer, will participate as a French producer. Details will be finalized at the Berlin European Film Market.
“But First, The Burning” follows two brothers who share one identity in a desperate town. A small deception to double your chances of survival gets you caught up in a dangerous secret game with just one survivor.
Makhija’s internationally recognized filmography includes ‘Joram’, ‘Bhonsle’ and ‘Ajji’. His Netflix thriller ‘Gandhari’ is scheduled to release this year. Jha has had a diverse career spanning projects like ‘Love Sex Aur Dhokha’, ‘Chauranga’ and ‘Lakadbaggha’.
The film is expected to start production in October after the release of director Jha’s action sequel ‘Lakadbaggha 2’. Jha will represent Berlin Film as lead actor and executive producer.
“Integrity, belief and pure vision are the cornerstones of this partnership,” Jha said. “We are thrilled to have Roh Moo-hyun and Lama on board for this film, our seventh and perhaps our most ambitious with Devasish, one of my favorite filmmakers in India.”
Benny Drexel of Roh Films Germany said: “I truly think ‘But First, The Burning’ is the most fascinating Indian script since probably ‘The Lunchbox’.”
Ramas’ Sandrine Brauer added: “We are very proud to be joining forces with the creative duo Anshuman and Devasish. Their films address spirals of violence with clarity and uncompromising clarity. Devashish’s previous films have already revealed a unique and promising voice, with a rare ability to take us on a powerful and compelling cinematic journey.”
