The Legally Blonde prequel series has an official premiere date set on Amazon Prime Video, with the streamer also renewing the show for a second season.
“ELLE” season 1 will be released in its entirety on Prime Video on July 1st. Production on Season 2 will begin this spring. According to the official logline, the show “follows Elle Woods (Lexi Maintree) during her high school years as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde movie.”
“Twenty-five years after the world first met Elle Woods, it’s a dream come true to share the story of how she became an unstoppable force that captivates us all,” said Reese Witherspoon, star of Legally Blonde and series executive producer. “Discovering Lexi Minnettree and watching her step into Elle’s amazing shoes was one of the most satisfying experiences of my career. The series’ themes of kindness, honesty, and believing in yourself will appeal to fans of the original film as well as new audiences alike. It’s been an incredible pleasure working with our amazing Hello Sunshine team, Amazon, and the visionary writers and directors to bring Elle’s high school life to life. We can’t wait to share Season 1 with the world. Let’s start rolling camera 2!”
In addition to Minetree, the cast also includes June Diane Raphael as Elle’s mother Eva, Tom Everett Scott as father Wyatt, Gabriel Policano, Jacob Moskowitz, Chandler Kinney, and Zack Rucker. Recurring cast members include Jessica Belkin, Logan Shroyer, Amy Peets, Matt Ober, Chloe Wepper, David Burtka, Brad Harder, Kayla Maisonet, Lisa Yamada, and James Van Der Beek.
“‘Elle’ captures the heart, confidence and optimism that made Elle Woods an enduring cultural icon, and provides viewers with a fresh and deeply personal coming-of-age story,” said Peter Friedlander, Global Head of Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “The Season 2 order represents our belief in the creative vision and incredible team behind the series, and we look forward to viewers experiencing Elle’s journey starting in Season 1.”
ELLE was created by Laura Kittrell, who serves as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Caroline Dries. Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Marc Platt and Amanda Brown will also serve as executive producers. Jason Moore directed the first two episodes and also served as executive producer.
The first Legally Blonde movie has been a box office success since its release in 2001, grossing more than $140 million worldwide. A sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde, was released in 2003. A third direct-to-video film was released in 2009, but Witherspoon served as a producer rather than starring. A stage musical based on the first film premiered on Broadway in 2007 and received multiple Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations.
