Kate Beckinsale has released an emotional PSA about her weight loss, reflecting on the “really, really tough year” she’s had so far.
In an emotional Instagram video on Wednesday, the actress called her weight loss a “physical manifestation of grief,” pointing to the deaths of her stepfather Roy Battersby and mother Judy Law in quick succession.
“I’m not really hungry,” the Total Recall star explained, speculating that he may have “some kind of survivor guilt.”
Beckinsale denied that her headline-grabbing changes were “like starving anorexia, it’s a matter of willpower.”
Instead, she claimed, “It’s like my body just shut down. I think it’s shocking and traumatic. I think watching the people you love the most suffer and die horrible, sometimes horrible, sometimes violent deaths, especially when you’re alone, it just makes you really hungry.”
The 52-year-old ended her social media upload by saying that “people have had mixed reactions” and slamming people for writing “nasty” comments about her appearance at a time when she was “obviously in pain”.
“(It never crosses my mind to do that),” she said of the “cruel S-T” insults she read from her followers.
“To all the people out there who are inconvenienced because I’m too thin, or too much, or not what they expect of me, I wish I had parents like me,” Beckinsale continued. “I absolutely refuse to be like you.
“If that’s something I inherited from my parents that I would never do that to anyone, then I’m very proud of that,” she concluded.
Beckinsale similarly clapped back at her haters after posting a bikini snap over the summer.
When an Instagram user wrote in July that the “Emma” star looked “not good” and “needs help,” Beckinsale wrote, “My body is keeping score.”
Her comment, which referenced Bessel van der Kolk’s book of the same name, continued: “Yes, that’s right (I need help). I’m going through one of the deepest and most painful periods of my life.”
In January, Beckinsale claimed that she had “lost too much weight lately” and slammed “passive-aggressive and completely unnecessary comments from someone.”
She advised: “Next time you feel like commenting about someone’s body, keep it to yourself.”
Beckinsale’s stepfather died of a stroke in January 2024, and Law lost his battle with cancer in July of the following year.
