“Jumbo” team reunites for live-action “Na Wila”

The creative team behind “Jumbo,” Indonesia’s highest-grossing film in history, will reunite for another family-friendly project.

Visinema Studios is producing the live-action adaptation of “Na Willa,” based on the children’s novel by Leda Gaudiamo. The project marks the second collaboration between director and screenwriter Ryan Adriandi, producer Angia Karisma and producer Novia Puspa Sari, who previously worked together on Jumbo.

Set in Surabaya in the 1960s, “Na Willa” follows an imaginative young girl going about her daily life in Indonesia. The studio describes the film as a heartwarming story that celebrates childhood and Indonesian family life.

The project marks Adrian Di’s live-action feature debut following his directing and writing of Jumbo. Newcomer Luisa Adrina stars in the title role, co-starring Irma Lich (The Women of Rote) and Junior Liem.

“‘Na Wira’ is more than just an adaptation of the story, it continues the spirit that made ‘Jumbo’ so special,” said Helly Salim, Group President of Vicinema and CEO of Vicinema Studios. “Our goal with Na Huira is to deliver a truly enjoyable film from start to finish that not only moves people, but also provides a rich visual and emotional experience.”

“I fell in love with Na Huira. The moment I read the novel, I was struck by its honesty and simplicity,” Adriandi said. “For years I have imagined how the world of Na Huira would come to life on screen and how a child would view life.”

Author Gaudiamo added, “I know that Na Huira is in the hands of people who truly love her. You can feel that warmth in every detail.”

The film is currently in production for release in Indonesia in 2026.

Bicinema Studios has had a strong year following the success of Jumbo, which became the most-watched Indonesian film and the highest-grossing Southeast Asian animated film of all time. The company has also expanded into international co-productions, such as “Pangil Aku Aya” (Call Me Dad) with CJ ENM, which is based on the Korean hit “Pawn.” The studio recently collaborated with Pinkfong on a special episode of the puppet series “Domikado.”
