For Halloween this year, Julia Fox decided to dress up as Jackie Kennedy. But it’s not just Jackie Kennedy.
Fox wore a pink suit to portray the first lady in 1963, covered in blood after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas in 1963.
She wore a controversial outfit consisting of a double-breasted pink tweed skirt set, pillbox hat, and structured handbag at The Cursed Amulet’s Halloween party in New York City on Thursday night.
The first lady famously chose to stand next to Lyndon B. Johnson as he was sworn in as president-elect, wearing the same Chez Ninon outfit she wore when she cradled her late husband in his ill-fated convertible.
Historian Steve Gillon told People magazine in 2022 that “despite these horrific circumstances, she was willing to pose for the photo because she understood what it meant for the country to continue in government,” adding, “She understood that she had a role in helping the country transition to a new president.”
“They actually had another dress for her to wear, but she refused,” Gillon said.
The costume still bears blood stains and has been kept in the National Archives since 1964. According to the Los Angeles Times, after Kennedy returned to the White House, her maid, Providencia Paredes, hid the suit in her bag.
“Sometime over the next six months, boxes containing the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and other treasures arrived at the National Archives headquarters downtown,” wrote Faye Fiore of the LA Times.
“These included suits, blouses, handbags, shoes and even her stockings, as well as an unsigned note written on letterhead stationery from Mrs Kennedy’s mother Janet Auchincloss: “Suit and bag worn by Jackie on November 22, 1963.”
No wonder Foxx crossed the line with her Halloween costume.
When People magazine shared footage of the star’s outfit on Instagram, commenters were largely displeased and made their opinions known.
One person wrote: “This is disturbing.”
She added, “This is wrong. I feel sorry for the Onassis and Kennedy families who had to watch and relive this. 😢.”
A third commenter agreed: “Very bad taste. The tragedy is not the costume.”
Fox has yet to comment on her costume choice, but for an actress who often garners attention for her sartorial choices, it’s likely that this outfit didn’t get the reaction she was hoping for.
