Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about her difficult experience after giving birth to her second child.
The 35-year-old actress spoke exclusively with PEOPLE on Saturday, November 1st, on the red carpet at the New York City premiere of her new film Die My Love. In the film, she plays a new mom struggling with the weight of motherhood, and said she was able to draw from her own life while working on the role.
“I didn’t really suffer from severe postpartum (anxiety) until I had my second (baby),” Lawrence said, adding that she believes the experience gave her a more nuanced perspective when approaching her latest project.
“I think it just added another layer,” she explained, adding, “I mean, I don’t think you ever need to have children to play a parent, but just having that information about what a little human needs and wants was helpful.”

The Oscar winner, who has son Cy, 3, born earlier this year with husband Cooke Maroney, previously opened up about her postpartum anxiety in a recent conversation with The New Yorker.
“Whenever he was sleeping, I thought he was dead,” she told the media about her baby. “I thought he cried because he didn’t like his life, he didn’t like me, he didn’t like his family. I thought I was doing everything wrong and I was going to ruin my kids.”

The actress told the media that her symptoms improved quickly and significantly after she took the recently developed postpartum depression drug Zurzubae.
Speaking to PEOPLE at Saturday’s premiere, Lawrence said she and Die My Love co-star Robert Pattinson bonded on set over being parents to a young child. The 39-year-old Twilight star gave birth to a baby girl with fiance Suki Waterhouse last year.

“[We]bonded over our kids because, as any new parent knows, all you want to do is look at pictures and show people pictures and videos of[your]kids. So that’s what we did,” she recalls.
“And his baby was as good as new, and so was my baby,” she added.
