Variety reported that Hulu has ordered a pilot version of the drama “Young Americans.”
The pilot was written by screenwriters and executive producers Chris Hutton and Eddie O’Keefe. Bruce Miller will serve as executive producer through White Oak Pictures, with White Oak’s Priscilla Polianda also serving as executive producer. TV number 20 is the studio.
The show’s logline reads, “As the children of America’s elite battle it out at Capitol Crest Academy in Washington, D.C., their teenage drama begins to reflect their parents’ larger political maneuverings. Amid secrets, scandals, and deadly ambitions, a forbidden romance between two students from rival political families threatens to escalate tensions to breaking point.”
This is one of several pilots Hulu is currently vying to pick up for series. The streamer is currently preparing pilots for the dark comedy “Rex,” as well as “Durango,” starring Cooper Hoffman and Kathryn Newton, and “Chicks,” starring Ellen Pompeo. Hulu’s Onyx Collective is also developing a pilot for an “X-Files” reboot starring Daniel Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, directed by Ryan Coogler.
Hutton and O’Keefe previously created the Quibi series “When the Streetlights Go On,” starring Mark Duplass and Sophie Thatcher. The show is based on a feature script they co-wrote and which was featured on The Blacklist. They have also developed projects for many platforms, including Apple, HBO, Amazon, and Paramount+. O’Keeffe previously wrote and directed the feature film Shangri-La Suite, starring Burt Reynolds, Emily Browning and Ron Livingston.
Miller is a frequent collaborator with Hulu, following the success of the series adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. “Mirror” will air in 2025 after six seasons. During its run, it received 77 Emmy Award nominations and won 15 times. These awards include multiple acting awards, Best Original Screenplay for a Drama Series (Miller), and Best Drama Series. Most recently, Miller produced a sequel series, The Testes, which began streaming on Hulu, and the show quickly earned a second season renewal. Miller is also known for his work on shows such as “ER,” “Eureka” and “Alphas.” He is currently developing projects such as “RetroActive” and “Suspect” at Hulu.
Hutton and O’Keefe are repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment. Miller is repped by Austin Tyerman of CAA and Jackoway.
