British actor Michael Byrne, who starred in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1,” has died. He was 82 years old.
Mr Byrne died on June 20, according to the Guardian.
His cause of death has not been disclosed.
Born on November 7, 1943 in London, England, Byrne had a prolific acting career that lasted nearly 60 years.
His first role came on stage in 1963, when he joined the National Theater Company, founded by Laurence Olivier, at London’s Old Vic.
He appeared in Death in the Palace, The Double Dealer and Much Ado About Nothing, all produced at the National Theatre, as well as The Cherry Orchard, The Seagull and Romeo and Juliet.
Later in her career, Byrne starred in Mary Stuart at the Duke of York Theater and Uncle Vanya at the Theater Royal in Bath.
Byrne made her film debut in 1963’s The Scarlet Blade and went on to appear in The Battlefield, The Eagle Has Descended, Henry VIII and His Six Wives, The Medusa Touch, and The Good Father.
In 1989, he played Nazi Colonel Ernst Vogel in the third Indiana Jones movie starring Harrison Ford.
Over the next two decades, Byrne appeared in Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning film Braveheart, the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies starring Pierce Brosnan, and Martin Scorsese’s blockbuster Gangs of New York.
In 2010, he played the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.
Three years later, he played South African heart surgeon Christian Bernard in the film Diana, which starred Naomi Watts as the late Princess of Wales.
On television, Byrne appeared on shows such as “The Living and the Dead,” “Midsomer Murders,” “American Rust,” “The Baby,” and “Bodies.”
From 2008 to 2010, he played Ted Page on the British soap opera Coronation Street.
His last acting appearance was in a 2023 episode of the six-part comedy-drama series “The Phoebus Files,” according to IMDb.
