George Clooney spoke in an interview with CBS News about how getting older has changed his views on vanity, marriage, and fatherhood. The 64-year-old actor said that getting older has made him more content and able to maintain a supportive and conflict-free relationship with Amal. Clooney also recalled that meeting Amal changed the way he viewed marriage and family, calling her a “force for good.”
In an interview with CBS News, George Clooney talked about how aging has had a positive impact on his 11-year marriage to wife Amal.
When asked if he wanted to check his appearance before starting the interview, the 64-year-old actor laughed and laughed off the question. “I don’t care. I’m too old.” He continued, “If you’re still holding on to any kind of vanity when you’re 64 years old… you’re chasing your own tail. It’s going to bite you. I’m me, I look like me, and I’ll be fine.”
Clooney added that as he has gotten older, his desire to “be right about everything” has diminished and he has become more content. “It’s aging or death. Those two, right? I’m fine with that,” he said. “I feel more grounded. I’m certainly less angry.”
He credits much of that change to the strength of his and Amal’s partnership, saying, “We’ve never fought, we’ve never had an argument.” “You get to a certain point in life where you say, ‘Well, why is this an argument or an argument?'” he says. “We have a really great relationship because we’re so supportive of each other. So when I was younger, I don’t think that would have happened. I think I would have held my head high and found something now where I could say, ‘It doesn’t matter, I don’t care.'”
Clooney acknowledged Amal’s past statements about not wanting to get married or have children, and spoke about how Amal has changed her views. “Well, to be honest, to tell you the truth, I met this amazing woman,” he said. “You know, Amal is the most extraordinary human being I’ve ever met. She’s intelligent and she stands for things that are important,” he added.
The interview took place during the Venice Film Festival, where the couple appeared in August to promote Clooney’s new film, Jay Kelly. The actor said visiting the Italian city was especially meaningful to him and Amal. “Coming to Venice is one of the most fun things in the world. We got married here and we love it here,” he explained.
Clooney, who has eight-year-old twins Ella and Alexander with Amal, also spoke about fatherhood. He joked that he would have to evaluate his parenting style in “about 10 years when the kids are in therapy,” adding, “That’s fine because we’re there. Most of the time I get to drive them to school and that’s fun. Amal is very present and there and is such a great mother.”
He also talked about how his personal life has become more important as he gets older. “We have to focus to make sure we’re working. I’m working, she’s working,” he said. “We also have to focus on spending time with our families and spending time with our loved ones. We have to spend more time because at the end of our lives we don’t want to think, ‘I wish I had worked more.'”
