What you need to know

Amy Schumer married her husband Chris Fischer on February 13, 2018, and their son, Gene David Fischer, was born on May 5, 2019. As she gets older, Schumer prefers to keep Gene away from the spotlight.

As Amy Schumer’s son Jean David Fisher gets older, his parents choose to keep him out of the spotlight, but he still finds ways to make his presence known.

In November 2025, Schumer shared new photos on Instagram that had been interrupted by Jean, including a photo of her peeking over her mother’s shoulder. “I’m about to go to a party and someone won’t go to bed,” she wrote.

The comedian welcomed a son with husband Chris Fischer on May 5, 2019.

“I just want to be with him as much as I can,” she told PEOPLE in October 2022. “I’m so grateful to be able to work and have time for myself. But it’s cruel. It hurts. I mean, there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s hard.”

From her hilarious quotes about parenting to the sweetest mother-son moments, here’s everything you need to know about Amy Schumer’s son Gene.

Schumer and Fisher welcomed Jean on May 5, 2019. Coincidentally, Jean was born just hours before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son Archie, so Schumer joked in an Instagram birth announcement: “Last night at 10:55pm. Our royal baby was born.”

The comedian first revealed she was pregnant in October 2018, prompting her friend Jessica Yellin to take to Instagram to announce the news and her list of voting recommendations for the 2018 midterm elections.

Below the list of names, Yellin included a message from Schumer that read, “I’m pregnant, Amy Schumer.”

Schumer has been very open about her pregnancy and birth experience, which she said was difficult.

On a December 2019 episode of the Informed Pregnancy and Parenting podcast, she talked about how “terrifying” she was to have a C-section, especially after initially planning a doula-assisted birth at a birthing center.

“I was throwing up for the first hour of my C-section,” the I Feel Pretty star said. “It’s supposed to take about an hour and a half, but in my case it took over three hours because I have endometriosis. It was really scary.”

Earlier that year, Schumer said in an interview with PEOPLE that giving birth was “the scariest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s so worth it.”

“The C-section…my pregnancy was so difficult that I was ready to meet my son,” she added.

To commemorate Jean’s second birthday in 2021, Schumer posted a photo of Jean and Fischer from birth on Instagram, thanking her husband for supporting her throughout the ordeal.

“In this first photo, he held my hand and looked into my eyes while I underwent a three-hour C-section, so I never felt alone,” she wrote of Fisher.

Schumer and Fisher originally named their son Gene Attel Fisher. During an episode of Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls, 1 Keith, Schumer revealed that she had changed her baby’s name to Jean David Fisher.

“So, Gene, did you know that our baby’s name has officially changed? It’s now Gene David Fisher,” Schumer said on the podcast. “It was Jean Attell Fischer, and we realized that we had accidentally named our son Genital.”

The couple originally chose Attell in honor of Schumer’s friend Dave Attell. According to Schumer, they changed it to David, who has now achieved “two stone”. The new nickname still references Attell’s first name and also pays homage to Schumer’s father, whose middle name is David.

The Life & Beth actress later joked about how her early parenting instincts were “completely wrong” during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

“So obviously we named him, you know, it was a coincidence. It was called Genital,” she said of her son’s original name.

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Schumer recalled a funny moment she shared with then-2-year-old Gene.

“He was wearing a baseball cap with a picture of a train on it, and he just looked at himself in the mirror and caught me giving the thumbs up,” she explained, imitating her son’s gesture to the audience.

“It was great,” she added. “If only I could tap into that confidence and self-love.”

Schumer shared another funny anecdote about Jean in a March 2022 interview with PEOPLE.

“He’s very sensitive to the fact that we’re laughing at him, as if he didn’t mean it,” she said. “He knows he’s funny. But he only wants to be laughed at when he wants to make me laugh.”

The actress said that Gene once told her, “Don’t laugh,” after hearing something he said and laughing.

“The other day I was holding him and he was like, ‘I want daddy to come in.’ So I said, ‘Okay, I’ll call you,’ and he said, ‘Is daddy coming?’ And I said, “Yeah,” and he said, “Yay!” And I laughed and he said, ‘Don’t laugh,'” she recalled. “I thought, ‘Okay, that’s fair,’ but I tried to explain it to him the way it was explained to me: ‘It’s good when people laugh. It means you make them happy and they love you.'”

Gene also has his own sense of humor and finds it funny when his comedian mother looks away. “He’ll signal me to do it,” Schumer said.

Schumer discussed the possibility that Gene is autistic.

In a March 2022 interview on Chelsea Handler’s podcast “Dear Chelsea,” Schumer talked about how she would feel if her son was on the autism spectrum like his father. Fisher was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder as an adult, and Schumer has often opened up about it over the years.

“Based on the statistics, I think it’s very likely that he is autistic,” Schumer said of Gene. “Parents have many different paths to take when it comes to this. Having a child with severe autism is more difficult than I could ever imagine. But if Jean were to develop ASD, I’m not looking for any signs of being upset, nor do I have any expectations one way or the other.”

Schumer explained that because Gene was 2 years old at the time, it would be several years before he was officially diagnosed. “There are some signs, but it’s going to take a long time before a diagnosis is made. To be honest, I don’t have a preference either way,” she said. “You just want your kids to be healthy and happy.”

The comedian previously replied to an Instagram user in August 2019 when asked how she would “cope” if her son was diagnosed, saying, “How would I cope? I don’t see being on the spectrum as a negative thing. My husband is the loveliest person I’ve ever met. He’s kind, funny, funny, talented and I respect him. Should I hope my son doesn’t end up like that?”

Jean was hospitalized with RSV in November 2022.

In November 2022, the family went through a terrifying few days. At that time, Gene was briefly hospitalized with RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). Schumer, who was rehearsing for Saturday Night Live, which he hosts, shared the news on Instagram, writing, “This has been the hardest week of my life. My son was rushed to the hospital and admitted with RSV, so I missed Thursday’s rehearsal.”

She added that he was “home and feeling better,” and thanked both the hospital staff and the SNL cast and staff, saying, “I couldn’t have asked for anyone to be more supportive.”

RSV, which was surging across the United States at the time Gene was infected, causes mild, cold-like symptoms in adults and older children, but can be especially dangerous for infants under 12 months of age.

Schumer says if Gene has another sibling, it could be through a surrogate mother.

Jean is an only child, but Schumer previously hinted that he and Fisher might be open to having another baby. However, due to Schumer’s surgery related to her endometriosis diagnosis and the difficulty of her first pregnancy, she has been told that she will probably never become pregnant again.

“We did IVF, and IVF was really hard for me. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do IVF again,” she said in an interview with Sunday Today’s Willie Geist in August 2020. “I have decided that I will never be able to get pregnant again. I have considered surrogate motherhood, but I think I will not do it for now.”

In April 2021, Schumer spoke again about the possibility of growing their family on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, telling the host:

Schumer is keeping Jean out of the spotlight

Schumer seems to be keeping his face off social media as his son gets older. She occasionally posts photos and videos featuring Jean, but Jean is often facing away from the camera or at an angle that doesn’t clearly show his face.

In one sweet photo, she and Jean are curled up together on a bed strewn with sippy cups, toys, and numerous children’s books.

“An out of office reply next month. Thank you,” she captioned the photo.
