The producers behind Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” and Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning “Parasite” are set in the headlines of the Tokyo Market Tiffcom seminar program, pinning a lineup of 14 sessions that spotlight the global ambitions of Japanese anime, international co-productions and Asian drama trade.
Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” producer Schuyler Weiss has won eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and will appear in the masterclasses presented at the Motion Picture Association and Digital Hollywood University. He will also be guest speaker for Tiffcom’s pitching contest, securing the winners a trip to Los Angeles for the Global Film & Television Immersion Program.
In terms of co-production, Choi Yoon Hee, CEO of Barunsung E&A and producer of Parasites, will work together with Shinya Kawai, known for “Swallowtail Butterfly” and “Yi Yi: 1 and A 2” to create a practical roadmap for international cooperation. Additional initiatives include the Japanese-Korean producer exchange hosted by VIPO and KOFIC, which will showcase 10 producers selected from both countries.
Japanese broadcasters will showcase their global strategy with Beaj’s “Japanese Broadcast Content Goes Global,” featuring Wowow, Ax-on, ABC TV, NHK Enterprises and TV Miyazaki. Nippon TV outlines its “Gear Up, Go Global” campaign, while TBS highlights the strategic alliance with VTV in Vietnam and the activities of the studio The Seven, which is behind “Alice in Borderland” season 3 and Busan competition entry “Baka’s Identity.”
Animation also became the central stage with the Japanese Animation Association, which presents new data from the 2024 industry survey, along with case studies on overseas expansion. The Hong Kong-Japan collaboration panel features director Raman Hui, producer Polly Yong and Bliss Concept Samuel Choi.
Other highlights include global breakouts of Thai BL and GL dramas, showcases of premium content, screen production Shanghai showcase, JETRO seminars on remakes of Turkey, and K-dramas Love Forbear and Someday of Me.
Tiffcom is organized by the Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Home Affairs and Communications, and universities. The Tokyo Market is operated by Prince Hamamatsu Chocho of the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center from October 29th to 31st, in addition to the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival (October 27th to November 5th).
