While filming Smashing Machines, Dwayne Johnson pitched himself to co-star Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada 2 to play a character who “knew fashion” and was “cool.” Johnson and Blunt reflected on their pitch on Entertainment Weekly’s “Awards” podcast on Nov. 19.
Johnson said, “He pitched himself. She said it while she was taking shots,” to which Blount jokingly added, “He tried.” Blunt joked that Johnson’s character would be someone who is “good at walking in heels.” “Size 15 heels,” Johnson declared.
Blunt concluded, “You should see him in heels. It’s hot,” and the pair shared a laugh.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the 2006 drama in which Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs navigates the cutthroat world of high fashion journalism as an assistant to Meryl Streep’s indomitable editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly. 20th Century Studios is set to release the long-awaited sequel next year, with Blunt reprising her role as Emily Charlton alongside Hathaway and Streep.
The sequel stars Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling, Tracy Thoms as Lily, and Tibor Feldman as Irv Ravitz, with David Frankel also returning as director. New additions to the cast include Kenneth Branagh as Miranda’s husband, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, and Simone Ashley as original characters. It has also been confirmed that Lady Gaga will appear in a small role in the movie. “It’s actually the role Dwayne wanted,” Blunt joked about the pop star’s upcoming role.
Details of the sequel’s story, written by the original film’s screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, are being kept secret. Blunt said he was “excited” about the script, but when asked about details, he bluntly replied, “They’re trying to get me to talk about the movie, and I can’t say anything.”
Blunt stood his ground when asked about the position of his character, who remained Priestley’s loyal senior assistant at the end of the first film. “I can’t say that,” Brandt said. “It would literally kill me.”
Johnson said that the fanfare for the film was huge, with large crowds hoping to catch a glimpse of the New York City set. “Emily would send me videos, and she’d be in her car waiting to go on set or on the streets of New York City, and she’d be like, ‘Look at this!'” Johnson said. “It was wild. It was like a pop star level spectacle.”
It’s clear that curiosity about the film is growing, but fans will have to wait until it hits theaters on May 1, 2026.
