‘Death Stranding’ franchise to become animated series on Disney+

Hideo Kojima took to the stage at Thursday’s Asia Pacific Preview of Disney+ Originals to announce an original animated series based on his video game franchise, tentatively titled Death Stranding Isolation, which will debut exclusively on Disney+ in 2027.

The legendary game creator appeared at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort with series director Takayuki Sano to announce the project, marking Kojima Productions’ first partnership with the global streaming platform. At the event, new concept art by Ilya Kuvshinov, character designer for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, was also unveiled.

Kojima will serve as executive producer of the series, and will write an entirely new story set in the world of Death Stranding, separate from the video game story. This animation project follows the adventures of a young man and woman, presented in traditional hand-drawn 2D animation. The animation production will be handled by Japan’s E&H Production.

The original Death Stranding PlayStation game launched in 2019 and attracted more than 20 million players worldwide. The series recently expanded with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which was released exclusively on PlayStation 5.

Kojima, who founded Kojima Productions in December 2015, is widely regarded as the father of the stealth game genre. In 2020, he was awarded a BAFTA Fellowship for his contribution to gaming. The original Death Stranding starred Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Léa Seydoux.

The Disney+ series is the latest expansion of gaming intellectual property into streaming animation, following the success of Netflix’s animated series such as Castlevania, Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
