Viewers will have to wait a little longer to get acquainted with “Clayface,” one of DC’s lesser-known characters. The superhero movie was originally scheduled to be released in theaters on September 11th, but the date has now been moved to October 23rd.
“Clayface,” for those who aren’t into all things Gotham, is a shape-shifting Batman villain. The genre has been described as body horror, but think Cronenberg. The film will be directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil) and written by Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep) and Hossein Amini (Drive). Up-and-coming Tom Rhys-Harries plays disfigured actor Matt Hagen, while Naomi Ackie plays a scientist seeking help. DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran will produce alongside The Batman directors Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. DC scored with last summer’s “Superman,” and critics and audiences saw the comic studio as back on track after a string of disappointments, including “The Flash” and “Black Adam,” before Gunn and Safran’s arrival.
“Clayface” was originally scheduled to face off against a new adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility.” Currently, the film has been moved to 2027, sliding into the release date vacated by another Warner Bros. film, Remain. Also opening that weekend will be Universal’s untitled Jordan Peele project and the Rosamund Pike thriller The Wife and the Dog.
Following the postponement of the release of “Clayface”, Warner Bros. has chosen to move the release date of its sequel “Practical Magic” to September 11th. The Witches sequel, directed by Suzanne Bier, was originally scheduled for release on September 18th. The film will once again feature original stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock.
