Ahead of the world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Variety has exclusively released the first clip of Chinese director Kaishanjun’s latest film, “The Sun Rises Us All.” The drama will also premiere in North America at the Toronto Film Festival and premiere in Asia at the Busan International Film Festival.
The suppressed drama stars Xhinii as Meyun. Meyun is a woman whose life faded when she met her ex-love Baoshu (Zhang Songwen), who went to prison for the crime she committed. Feng Shaofeng is an emotional character study co-star on guilt and the possibility of forgiveness.
Kai, who won Venice’s Best Director and Silver Lion in 2011 for “People Mountain People Sea,” explains in a statement from the director that the film follows May Yun, avoiding dramatic plot twists for a turbulent month. According to the filmmakers, the story focuses on everyday beings and unfolds through “the logic of perception and emotion.”
“The Sun Rises Us All” is produced by Guangzhou Mint Pictures and Gangzhou Zizai Media and is sold internationally by MK2 Film. The script is by Han Nianjin and marks her first feature script.
Xin Zhilei competed in Berlin in 2016 and became famous for “CrossCurrent,” which recently appeared on Wong Kar-Wai’s “Blossoms Shanghai.” Zhang Songwen received the best support actor in the Youth Film Handbook Award for “The Shadow Play” in 2018.
Previous CAI films include “The Red AWN,” which won the Fipresci Award in Busan, and “Conformist,” which was screened in Toronto. His Venice winner, People Mountain Peoples Sea, was also honored at the Nantes festival and the Pacific Meridian International Film Festival.
