Britney Spears is facing “hostility” as her estranged family members lobby to reunite her with her estranged father, Jamie Spears.
Britney’s Los Angeles sources, who are in regular contact with Britney’s friend group and family, exclusively told Us Weekly that they are “threaten” about Jamie’s potential return following the troubled pop star’s DUI arrest.
Meanwhile, Jamie, who has been running Britney’s conservatorship for 12 years, says he doesn’t want to be separated from his daughter any longer.
“He wants the chance to talk to her and find a compromise,” the employee says.
The source also claims that Britney’s sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jaden, 19, have been supportive of Jamie, 73, and their grandfather potentially reconciling with their mother.
“The boys have also returned to their grandpa’s life after some difficult times,” a source said. “Despite years of drama, they will welcome a united family.”
However, the 44-year-old singer is “repulsed by the topic” of her father.
“There is a long-term hatred and disgust that may never be overcome,” the source says. “Jamie makes Britney anxious, and the thought that he might come into her life makes her mood so dark…despite the efforts of the people in her life to reunite.”
“In recent months, this has only increased as the boys have been around more and more. There is a direct correlation between that stress and Britney’s reliance on alcohol to numb the pain. Sadly, she will always see her father as the bad guy because she felt trapped and controlled by the conservatorship.”
The source added, “She hated having to follow regular doctor visits, therapy sessions, and medication regimens, which is to be expected for anyone dealing with bipolar disorder. Obviously, it’s a difficult situation for a father to oversee the principles of that process, especially emotionally, but her condition required medical supervision.”
Another source close to the family told Page Six that Jamie had “suffered serious health problems in recent years” and was “deeply hurt that his daughter would never consider talking to him again.”
“When his life seemed in jeopardy, he held out hope that his daughter would come and see him,” the source said. “But that didn’t happen.”
While the #FreeBritney movement has portrayed the singer’s father as the villain, family friends insist that all Jamie wanted was to keep his daughter alive and to find a financial solution.
“Jamie consistently told those around him that he was proud of ‘saving Britney’s life,’ no matter what people thought,” family friends added.
They also claim that “various attempts have failed” to reunite Jamie and Britney, and that Britney appears to fear that her father “will somehow regain conservatorship,” which is clearly a very difficult legal task that Jamie doesn’t have the energy to consider.
Back in 2021, Jamie’s attorney, Vivian L. Thoreen, filed papers arguing that the conservatorship was good for her daughter, even though Jamie was upset with her treatment.
Sorine writes: “Probate courts have extensive experience with these issues and take them very seriously.”
Before the conservatorship ended in November 2021, Jamie filed documents expressing concerns about her daughter’s mental health.
Thoreen also outlined Britney’s mental health issues in court filings at the time.
“If the public knew all the facts of Mr. Spears’ personal life, not only her good times but also her bad times, all of the addiction and mental health issues she has struggled with, and all of the challenges of her conservatorship, they would admire the work he has accomplished instead of vilifying Mr. Spears,” she wrote.
“However, the public does not know, and has no right to know, all the facts. Therefore, there will be no public redress for Mr. Spears.”
“The conservatorship has provided Ms. Spears with a structure that has helped her navigate the daily challenges of her personal life, family issues, medical issues, career, and more. By its nature, the conservatorship includes safeguards to protect the conservator from self-harm and harm from others,” Thoreen added.
“There is no question that the conservatorship saved Ms. Spears from disaster, supported her when she needed it most, protected her and her reputation from harm, and facilitated the recovery of her career.”
Last fall, Britney’s ex Kevin Federline (with whom she shares a son) expressed concern in his memoir that Britney could suffer the same fate as late pop divas such as Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse.
“This is what I’m warning people… there is a serious problem,” he wrote. “I don’t want this to be another Whitney. I don’t want this to be an Amy Winehouse situation.”
According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, Britney was arrested last week on suspicion of driving under the influence.
She is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4.
“This was a totally unacceptable and unfortunate incident,” her attorney told Page Six after her arrest. “Britney intends to take the right steps and abide by the law. We hope this is the first step in the long-awaited changes that should occur in Britney’s life.”
