Tina Knowles revealed that her granddaughter’s name, Blue Ivy Carter, was actually inspired by blueberries.
“I remember the day I found out you were in your mother’s womb,” Beyoncé’s mother commemorated her 14th birthday on Instagram on Wednesday.
“I couldn’t have been more excited. They told me you were the size of a blueberry and that’s where your name came from,” Knowles continued, noting that the family “prayed together” every day until Blue Ivy was 12 weeks old “in her mother’s womb.”
“It was clear from the beginning that you were a fighter and you talked about it very early on,” the proud grandmother, 72, continued.
“And you were always smart as a whip, and we were always playing princesses and Barbie dolls, and your imagination was incredible.”
Alongside a collage of photos from each year, Knowles confessed, “It’s no exaggeration to say that[she is]a proud grandmother!”
“Despite all your accomplishments and success, you remain a very kind and humble person,” Knowles concluded her post. “❤️ To my manager, makeup artist, fashion advisor, and beloved. Happy birthday ❤️”
Fans took to the comments thread to share their sweet tributes, with one person chiming in: “So sweet.”
“As a first grandchild, I know firsthand the special bond you have with your grandmother. It’s unbreakable,” said another. A third enthused: “The most iconic 14-year-old of all time.”
“Lemonade” hitmaker Beyoncé (44) and music mogul Jay-Z (56) welcomed their first child together on January 7, 2012 in New York City.
“Hello hello Baby Blue!” the couple wrote in a statement at the time, including Blue Ivy’s name and date of birth.
“Her birth was emotional and very peaceful. We are in heaven,” the power couple added. “She weighed a healthy 7 pounds and had a natural birth. It was the best experience of both of our lives.”
Jay-Z previously revealed that Blue Ivy was not the name he originally planned for his first daughter.
“Her name was supposed to be Brooklyn,” the rapper told Gayle King during an appearance on “CBS Morning” in 2023.
“That was the name in theory, but when we did an ultrasound, it was very small, so we called it a blueberry,” he explained.
“Like, ‘Look at the little blueberries!’ That was a nickname. For nine months, we were like, ‘Look at the little blueberries,’ so it was a natural thing.” We removed the “berry” and named her Blue. ”
