“Avatar: Aang: The Last Airbender” is finally streaming on Paramount+ and playing in select theaters, but it’s been a long road for Team Avatar to hit our screens.
The film follows Nickelodeon’s popular animated show Avatar: The Last Airbender, but before its sequel series, The Legend of Korra. Aang (Eric Nam), Katara (Jessica Matten), Sokka (Roman Zaragoza), Toph (Dionne Quan), and Zuko (Steven Yeun) return as adults for a new adventure and discover another missing airbender named Taga (Dave Bautista). The film premiered at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday and will begin streaming on Saturday, but some impatient fans may have already seen it since it leaked online earlier this year.
In April, a clip of “Avatar Anne” somehow went viral on social media, followed by the release of the full movie. Later, a 26-year-old man was arrested in Singapore for illegally accessing a media server and leaking the film. The cast of “Avatar Aang” and the original “The Last Airbender” stars immediately spoke out against the infringement and urged fans not to watch the unauthorized version.
“There’s something about respecting the intentions of the creators and the many artists who have poured years of their lives into this work. To do it the right way is a very respectful way of showing appreciation for this art form and the many, many countless hours that have gone into it,” Nam said at the Variety Studio presented by Google TV. “Everyone, thank you for waiting.”
Original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko founded Avatar Studios in 2021 to continue telling stories in the animated world after stepping away from Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender remake. “Avatar Aang” was originally scheduled to be released in theaters in 2025, but it was delayed multiple times and ultimately canceled in favor of a release on Paramount+. Fans who were hoping for the animated show’s big screen debut were disappointed by the news. But earlier this month, Paramount announced that “Avatar Aang” would be given a limited release in select theaters, eligible for the Oscars and other awards shows.
The second sequel series, Avatar: Seven Heavens, will premiere on Paramount+ on October 9th, but more Team Avatar stories are in the works.
“Well, it’s a movie, and we’re excited to see what happens with it,” Konietzko said. “There’s a lot of stuff in development. There’s a script that I feel is very good, but let’s see how this one pans out. In fact, I’m working on a series from another era, and I can say that I’m really excited about it. There’s a lot to explore in the Avatar world, in different eras, in different tones. We’ve been in this world for 24 years, and it’s still fruitful for me.”
Many years have passed between the end of “The Last Airbender” and the beginning of “The Legend of Korra,” which the creators can explore, including the beginning of Aang and Katara’s family. In fact, “Avatar Aang” almost impregnated Katara with her first child, but the team later scrapped that idea.
“We knew the characters were going to get older, so we were trying to figure out how to represent that,” DiMartino said. “Having a family is a big transition in your life, and we know in The Legend of Korra that Bumi is their first child. We explored that option. It started to feel a little too adult, and we felt like we jumped through the maturation years of our teens to our mid-20s.”
Konietzko said, “It was a strange twist. The plot of the movie started putting a strange context into the birth of Katara’s baby, which wasn’t the best. It had strange implications. The reason we wanted them to have a family was because she didn’t give birth to The Last Airbender.” It wasn’t because she had to. We didn’t think this was necessary. Maybe it wasn’t a great idea for her to fight Taga with this big belly. We didn’t want her to, because it almost became a damsel in distress.” Also do that. ”
Director Lauren Montgomery agreed with this decision and said that another film could depict the period of Aang and Katara’s relationship.
“Ultimately, we want to leave room in case we want to tell more stories,” she said. “We’ve all seen ‘Korra’ and we know where their relationship goes, and it always goes off to a place of love. This is our first outsider movie, so we’re going to give it some leeway until we get to the other arcs. There’s a lot of stories to tell.”
