Amazon Prime Video’s God of War TV series has added veteran director Frederick E.O. Toy to the creative team.
Variety has confirmed that Toy will direct the first two episodes of the epic video game adaptation, which is currently in pre-production. It was also confirmed that Amazon has ordered two seasons of the series and casting is underway.
As previously reported, the series will adapt Kratos’ story starting with the 2018 God of War game. The show’s official logline reads, “‘God of War’ follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos attempts to teach his son to be a better god, and Atreus attempts to teach his father how to be a better man.”
Mr. Toy is a highly accomplished television director, winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for FX’s “Shogun” Drama Series in 2024. He has also worked on hit shows such as “Westworld,” “The Walking Dead,” and “Watchmen.” Toy is a familiar face to Amazon viewers, having helmed episodes of “The Boys,” “Fallout” (another video game adaptation), and both “The Terminal List” and “The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.”
He is repped by CAA and Sloan Offer.
Amazon’s “God of War” movie adaptation has already come a long way. The show was originally greenlit for the e-commerce giant’s streaming arm in 2022. Original showrunner Rafe Judkins left the show in October 2024, with Ronald D. Moore joining as the new showrunner shortly thereafter.
Moore is the writer, executive producer and showrunner of God of War, which is owned by Tall Ship Productions. Other executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Kizilbash, Carter Swan, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Aragon. Joe Menosky, Mark Bernardin, Tania Lottier, Ben McGinnis and Jeff Ketchum will serve as co-executive producers. The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Tall Ship has an overall deal with Sony TV.
Deadline first reported Toy’s involvement.
