Amy Poehler called out Oscars on her “Good Hang” podcast to ignore comedy films whenever it’s time to give away awards. Poehler’s latest episode featured Olivia Colman as a guest and as part of the latter press conference as part of the searchlight photo comedy, The Rose. Colman appeared on the other side of Benedict Cumberbatch and briefly chatted with Polar after calling the “Good Hang” episode.
“If you can comedy, you can do anything, and I really believe it,” Cumberbatch declared.
“Of course. You don’t need to tell me, baby!” Poehler, a genuine comedy icon, replied, thanks to “SNL”, “Parx and Recreation.”
“Every year at Oscars, everyone is blank (comedy) and all serious people get up and accept and accept,” Pauler said. “It’s some hot bullshit! Because comedy isn’t easy. And I can both you and Olivia.”
Oscar has certainly embraced more films over the years that contain comedic elements, but does not usually sound dramatic comedy, including winners of best picture such as “Anora” and “All Places.” Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was a rare recent exception with eight nominations, but it didn’t get the best photos. Both Gerwig and Star Margot Robbie were shockingly closed from the best directors and best actress races. The Rian Johnson comedy “Knife Out” film, like “The Bridesmaid,” went back at the 2012 Oscars, only received nominations for the script.
As for the upcoming 2025 Oscar race comedy, there are more dramatic trends like Yorgos Lantimos’ “Bagonia” and Noah Banbach’s “Jay Kelly.” Traditional comedies such as “Friendship”, “Lucky”, and “Naked Gun” all got strong reviews, but perhaps a long shot. Johnson has returned to his third “Knife Out” film, “Wake Up Dead Man,” but it remains to be seen whether the franchise will be able to infiltrate major categories such as Best Picture and Acting Race.
